Heres maybe why MS dropped remote activesync:

"Ahem" VPN would get around the above flaw!

WHAT TO DO?
Ive had a good hunt round the web but cannot find a single remotesync
solution for WM5.... Most piggy back on MS-ActiveSync, which wont remote
connect.

All I can say is that it was dropped due to security concerns.
Microsoft has not released any information on when (or if) it will
make a reappearance.

If you want to do remote sync, you can look at using a hosted Exchange
solution such as that from 4Smartphone (http://www.4smartphone.net),
which will allow you to synchronize directly with the Exchange server
over any TCP/IP connection (GPRS, WiFi, cradle, Bluetooth PAN, etc.)
