Ive just set up SBS2003 with ExchangeSP2 and guess what, no connection. Im
not even remotely suprised!! (pun intended)
I am using a FQDN, but cannot sync to exchange locally when USB-connected to
the PC&User which is on the domain.
When using wireless my SBS is the DHCP server and gives the WM5 its IP! .
But Wm5 tries to create a VPN connection, persumably because I used the SBS
Async wizard. Which isnt needed and wont work as Im on the
internal-intranet.
Interestingly (for SBS post) I can browse on Wm5 to //SBSserver/ and can
click on the "Connect to the network now" wouldnt this be a good place to
configure the Wm5 device?
Complete and total bloody mess!
Anyone considering MS products should first read their "Product Benefits
Page" and then apply the principle that all the positive statements "Ease
and speed of configeration" & "Improved support for mobile devices" are in
fact a list of those things the products fail to achieve!!

I've got a similar setup, but haven't had any problems at all, however I've
got a few pointers for you.
Are the ActiveSync firewall ports/Programs included ?
C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\WCESMgr.exe
C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\wcescomm.exe
C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\rapimgr.exe
ActiveSync Service on port 26675/TCP
Have you application unlocked you mobile ? (It seems that most phone
operators and manufactures lock the phone in some way. Search www.modaco.com
forums for information on 'application unlocking' ) You can then copy across
and install the SBS certificate.
Is your wireless access point (I'm assuming that you're not refering to
GPS/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS) give out any DHCP addresses? If the wireless access is
via your PC, Activesync will fail - It's been disabled in version 4 due to
large company requests. (Poor excuse, I know)
Not too sure why your WM5 device is trying to connect via a VPN unless
you've configured it to or the mobile operator has done it. Check to see if
there are any VPN connection settings in your device. A cold boot maybe
required to reset it.
Hope this helps

Im using AP-Routers with DHCP assigned from SBS
Wm5 gets IP from SBS not the APs
PC is on LAN/Domain
The VPN connection is actually called "SBS" and is created when using "SBS
Tools" in my PC start menu.
I will have a look at the ports issue.
However the PC is on the domain and has been configured by SBS(lastest
updates) which included activesync install of 3.8!
DUH! So had to install Async 4.1 maybe this is the issue, anyone know whats
up with SBS and Async3.8 V 4.1??
Can I configure SBS to install 4.1 on clients rather than 3.8? Should the
SBS updates not include 4.1 etc etc

SBS patches came out in the Active Sync 3.8 era not the 4.1 so no, the
SBS updates will not include the 4.1 active sync.
You manually install the cert with the new Mobile 5 phones... it is not
automatic.

There are two...
SBS 2003 sp1 came out in May... Active Sync 4.1 after that... they don't
refresh the SP1 for every update in every piece of software unfortunately.

Hi jd
have you checked your VPN connection settings on your phone yet ?
The 'push' mail notification settings are not yet real push email. An update
is required for all wm5 devices which has only been released by one
manufacutrer in Taiwan so far - Jason Langridges's blog is worth keeping an
eye on for developements on this
http://blogs.msdn.com/jasonlan/archive/2006/1/19.aspx plus your device
manufacturers website.
What your phone is currently offering you is AUTD (always-up-to-date).
The bottom line difference between the two is that AUTD sends your phone a
text message (via your service provider) telling it to sync with the server.
The 'push' email update for your device when it finally arrives, (and I do
assure you a LOT of people are waiting for this) means that your phone is
directly in contact with your SBS server all of the time (cost about 1mb of
data a month). When a new message is available, the server sends a directly
message to you phone telling it to sync.
If you want to use AUTD, you are very much in the hands of your service
operator. Search the www.modaco.com for help with your one. You can call
them and ask them about their email to sms service (They are unlike to know
what AUTD is). Hopefully they will give you an email address that you can
input into your pda. (it will be something like your mobile number plus the
domain name of your service provider).
I do encourage you to try a few wm5 forums as your queries would probably be
better servered by them.

Yep, SP2 is required, although I'm glad to say that so far, it seems quite a
painless exercise.
Check out
http://www.vladville.com/articles/exchangesp2sbs2003.asp
for full info on installing it.
Also have a look at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;907747
about enabling IMF updates (Note: visit MICROSOFT update site , rather than
WINDOWS update site to find the imf updates)
Finally have a look at Susan's post on 'Paranoia for Phones' and the remote
management features.
