I am syncing with two machines - desktop via usb and IBM via infrared.
Desktop is fine. IBM is slow to get going - sometimes it does not
connect and sometimes the connection is dropped during the sync via
infrared. The ipaq reports that it is still syncing but activsync says
it is not connected. I had no problems with my jornada which I had
until a few weeks ago. Desktop has XP Home SP2, and IBM has XP Pro SP2
- both totally up to date. Any ideas would be welcome!!
Can you try Ir sync or a straight file transfer with another laptop/PC? Its
possible either your PPC Ir hardware is bad or the IBM Ir hardware is bad
and trying Ir with another laptop/PC may help find the failing device.

The IR sync can be quite slow, especially if you are syncing lots of stuff..
Is your device turning itself off before the sync is finished?
I find when syncing my X51v via IR that I have to point it at the laptop,
select ActiveSync on the device, choose Sync via IR from the menu. This is
enough to fire off the AS on the desktop, but not always to make the sync.
So I need to press Menu, Sync via IR a second time to get the sync going.
Once this is done once in the day, the other syncs over the next hour or so
work smoothly.
(The first sync each day I always do through WiFi to Exchange or USB to
laptop - so as to avoid the slow initial sync with lots of data).

Hi,
I have never been able to get either of my dell axims to connect. Active
Sync hangs and then they disconnect. I have never had a problem with the
devices seeing my pc but something happens when the actual transfer of data
starts. My thinking on this subject is that is has to be a lame ir device.
people told me to just buy whatever but I am starting to wonder if I should
have gotten a nicer one. I tried Al's direct transfer of a file and it sees
my pc no problem but says failed everytime.
Any thoughts mvps?

OOps I was wrong I don't use VPN. I use real vnc. Sorry. However I am not
sure the 2wire portal would be interferring with infared. Perhaps you know
better. Let me know. I have some advanced settings on it that I would have no
idea what to do with them anyhow. So I will definitely appreciate your help.

OK, I have gotten further. I had xp's infared software disabled and that has
helped a bit more but still hasn't allowed me to sync. If I put my device in
from of the port it is seen very well quickly. No problems there. I can even
transfer files now. Activesync starts up great and asks me to establish a
partnership and I go though all the screen prompts and then the progress bar
shows on the pocket pc screen but then it just hangs and finally disconnects.
I get an error messages that says: "A system error has prevented microsoft
active syn from setting up a partnership. Please diconnect and restart the
computer and try again."
Hope this is a bit more helpful.
Thanks in advance.

Can you check on the IrDA implementation you're using - you should be
able to set it in the BIOS. If you are using IrDA 2.0, try switching
it to IrDA 1.1

Rob,
Success at last. The culprit was in thr ir settings on Wndows. Set
maximum speed lower (one notch) to 19200 and works great now.
Thanks for answering my plee for help.
Best regards,
