Hi all, we have a user that loves VZW 6700 device using Verizon's EVDO and
syncing to the Exchange server... but is traveling to Europe... no VZ service
there... so I'm thinking - good, just find a wireless hotspot and sync via
that... then I've heard this doesn't work under Mobile 5?? What the heck? Can
someone confirm this, or if it is possible - do we need to set up another
connection setting? TIA - Dodge

Hi,
Yes you can sync using Exchange ActiveSync via Wi-Fi.  The Wi-Fi network
needs to connect to the internet to allow this.  However DirectPush is not
supported with Wi-Fi.

The issue you are referring to has to do with Microsoft dropping support in
ActiveSync 4.x to sync via any TCP/IP network.  This was done because of
security concerns.  However this will not affect your use of Exchange to
sync.

Hi Chris,
Does a new/different connection setting need to be created for this?
Thanks-- Dodge

Hi,
There should be no change required to the server settings.  However I am
assuming that you are now able to sync via EvDO and that there is no
firewall blocking access of the e-mail from Europe.

Correct - EVDO was setup and working... and firewall is not an issue at
Europe site... but it could be a factor to keep in mind depending on access
site. Thanks!!

Hi All,

Using Activesync 4.1 direct push only appears to only work with GPRS. Worse,
it seems that if you turn on WiFi (say perhaps, because you are at home and
don't want to use your metered GPRS data) the direct push stops working
because the GPRS connection is terminated and directpush does not re-activate
it.

Anyone had a similar experience?

Dan.

Yes, it doesn't work over WiFi ("power" appears to be the main reason for
that; having it set up to use WiFi would require that the device be "on" all
the time; GPRS doesn't require that, the device can wake up when an external
message pages it).
