I understaqnd that you can no longer use wifi with activesync 4.x ???
This is why I bought my new IPAQ!!!
Can you downgrade to activesynch 3.8 on mobile pc 5 O/S I have heard this
wont work.
What are my options to use Wifi to sync my exchange ?

Hi Jason,

You can't downgrade to Activesync 3.8, nor can you sync through WiFi with
Activsync 4.0. Syncing to an exchange server is possible.

Thanks Jaap,
I didnt quite understand the last comment did you mean :-
If I downgrade to Activesync 4.0 I can then synch to the exchangeserver via
WiFi
(assumung the Exchangeserver supports it)

-- I have a HP2490 with WM5.0 and Activesync 4.1

To clarify,

wm5 requires Async 4.1 or higher... you will not be able to use Async
3.x with your new ppc

ASync 4.x no longer allows wifi sync... this is a Microsoft design decision

Exchange Server is the only option to sync via ethernet

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news,

Thank You, but sorry to sound daft,
the last comment has confused me again.

> Exchange Server is the only option to sync via ethernet

Does this mean;
a) I need to connect my PocketPC to its cradle and then my laptop to
Ethernet (Cabled) and Syncroinise Exchange this way
or
b) I can Sync Exchange via Ehternet directly from the PocketPC (Am I
mistakingly confusing the term Wifi and Ehternet)

Thanks for your patience

Exchange server is a (costly) business server application designed for
enterprise use to allow corporate customers to connect to their home
offices when mobile...

unless you have purchased and installed Exchange Server, you will not be
able to sync via wifi... microsoft elected to completely remove that
option for most WM5 users who cannot justify the expense of the server
software.

>> Am I mistakingly confusing the term Wifi and Ehternet <<

The term "ethernet" refers to network connections which includes "wifi"
and I used that term in place of "wireless" as it is possible to sync
using "bluetooth" if your sync pc is capable of making bluetooth device
connections...

many current laptops have bluetooth built in, or, you can purchase
usb/bluetooth dongles if you have XP are willing to go through the pain
of setting up a bluetooth sync connection. (fwiw, I have yet to succeed
at achieving one ;-)

hope this clarifies.

Hi Beverly,
Thanks for your help.

I understand about Exchange and use a hosted "managed Exchange" service that
supports mobile devices.

I have now a better understnding because I have actually got the Exchange
sync to work via usb cradle and wifi ( I had to disable sync of the
calendar). I have read in other forums that on the HP Pocket PC's with WM5
that there is a known issue with the calendar (on some) devices.

Thanks again for your clarification.

Hi,
Microsoft designed Windows Mobile 5.0 to only synchronize with ActiveSync
4.x.  There is no support to sync with Windows Mobile 5.0 with ActiveSync
3.x.  So you cannot sync with Wi-Fi to your PC and Outlook.

However you can sync with Exchange 2003 with Wi-Fi, Ethernet, EvDO, EDGE,
GPRS or UMTS.  This is because synchronizing with Exchange 2003 does not use
ActiveSync  4.x or 3.x..
