Hi All,

I have a T-Mobile MDA, and I'm not able to make a backup of my contacts
and my data.
It looks like the only way is to use ActiveSync, that requires Outlook.
- I don't have (and can't have) Outlook;
- I don't want (and can't) copy personal data in the office computer (I
can create one backup file, I cannot add contacts and personal data to
some software or folder);
- I need more backup configurations (backup1, backup2, etc.) because I
might want to go back to one previous configuration, not 2 synchronized
environments;
- To use ActiveSync you need to configure it, I want to backup in order
not to waste time configuring.

I found some reference to the backup menu item in ActiveSync, but I
don't have that menu item.

How do Windows Mobile 5 device owners do their backups in a reliable
and easy to use way?

Thanks,
Stefano

Well, it depends on the definition of "backup".  If you can't use
ActiveSync, you aren't sharing contacts with a desktop computer?  In Windows
Mobile 5/ActiveSync 4.2, the synchronized items are the only backup that's
available.  There used to be a Backup/Restore item in ActiveSync, but, with
the advent of flash filesystems in WM5 devices, MS deemed that unnecessary
(the RAM filesystem on older devices is gone if you run the battery dead, so
it was fairly important, then).

If you have no ActiveSync, you want a backup in the same sense that you
might backup your desktop machine to tape, DVD, or whatever.  You'll have to
buy a third-party backup program for that.  I use spbBackup.  It will backup
items on a schedule or you can do backups manually.  I have mine configured
to save two backup files, run the backup in the middle of the night every
night, etc.

Might also check your start\programs for a backup utility and also see
if there is a backup utility located on the companion CD.

However, would recommend purchasing Sprite even if you have one...
specifically for the convenience and ease factor you mentioned.  There
are a couple of others that are probably just as good but have not used
them.

Hello,

I personally use Spb Backup to backup my devices.  You can read my review of
it at http://www.clintonfitch.com/reviews/spb/backup%2D1%2D5/
