Hello,
I have a user who has a Treo 700 and sync(ActiveSync 4.2) with his desktop
via USB with Outlook 2003.
THe problem is this: The ActiveSync window opens and it says searching for
changes (or something that effect)..it seems like it's working (it will stay
on that screen for about 5 minutes)..then finally I get this error:
Synchronization cannot be completed successfully. Reconnect your device and
try again. If the problem persists, see the Microsoft ActiveSynch
Troubleshooter in Microsoft ActiveSync Help on your desktop computer.
The sync isnt completely failing because when I check the calendar or
contacts, they are updating. Has anyone seen this error and how did you
resolve it? I've already tried doing a soft reset, deleting the device from
Active Syncc and re-adding it.
From what I've read, a hard reset works sometimes, but I hesitate to try it
because this Treo belongs to one of our VP's..and if I erase his Treo and
can't get it back "he won't be able to function" (that's a direct quote my
friends!).
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Have you confirmed that you can sync with another Treo 700w with the PC?
This will tell you if it's a problem with the PC or the 700w.

I have had a similar problem periodically with 3.8 (can't run the newer
versions as they don't work with MightySync which I use quite a bit). I found
that the reason is that Activesync on the device has disengaged, but not told
the PC that it is off. Compounding this is that something in the device
doesn't fully reset either. Sometimes, calling Activesync on the device, then
closing it will allow it to sync upon docking, but this often takes some
persistence.
I have found that if this occurs, I can connect to my wireless LAN with the
device and sync manually across the LAN. Once that happens, I turn off the
wireless and it will happily sync in the cradle thereafter.
What usually causes this to occur is if my device backup software is run
while it is in the cradle, it shuts Activesync down and apparently doesn't do
it correctly anymore (another bug in a new version of Sunnysoft Backup
Manager I suspect). If I have it backup on a schedule, the problem doesn't
arise. I know when it will happen because the device shuts ActiveSync down,
but I don't get the disconnect tone.
Don't know if any of this helps you, but this is my situation.

I have the exact same problem as Nick. (except that I am using an HTC
Wizard instead of Treo).
I have been able to resolve it by going to Control Panel->Add/Remove
Programs and asking it to "repair" my activesync 4.2 on my desktop.
It repairs activesync (I do nothing else except remove the device from
the cradle - I do not reboot or even restart outlook) then it works and
syncs all my data EXACTLY ONE TIME.
If I try to sync again I get the exact same error as reported below.
I am currently reduced to "repairing" my activesync every evening just
before I sync my laptop.
I have tried everything including hard-reset of my device to
reinstalling activesync on desktop.
