Hello,
I'm running a WinXP SP2 computer with a Bluetooth controller and MS
Bluetooth stack.
I connected a smartphone to it using Bluetooth and a serial replacement
profile (ActiveSync).
I often let or force my computer to enter standby or suspend-to-disk. When I
resume it, ActiveSync 4.5b2 crash after my session opened.

Is this behavior common, normal or known?

Hi,
ActiveSync is not designed to be synchronizing during a suspend/standby.
Basically the suspend/standby disrupts the communication.

Also I would report the issue to astell at microsoft.com so they are aware
of it.  They may modify ActiveStnc so it won't allow the PC to
suspend/standby while you are synchronizing.

Hi again Chris,
Sorry, I’ll try to re-explain, in details, my case.

I've linked my device (a smartphone in this case) to my PC for the
ActiveSync service (a derivate from the serial port profile it seems) using
Bluetooth.
I make sync. The sync is finished; nonetheless the two devices are still
connected. I put my PC under standby or suspend-to-disk. After I resume and
re-enter my session, ActiveSync crashes.

Sébastien Mouren

Hi Sebastien,
Since the device was connected, it is still sending and receiving packets
from the PC.  The PC will stop communicating abruptly when you go into
suspend/hibernate mode.  However the Smartphone still thinks it is
connected.  It will eventually time out.

So the error with ActiveSync is that it should just end the connection
rather than crashing.  It should not crash as you described.  This can be
resolved in multiple ways by Microsoft including not allowing you to
suspend/hibernate while ActiveSync is connected to a device.  Another option
is to review the engineering of the device drivers to see if they can
workaround the abrupt termination of the connection.

I have a bit of a different slant on this problem but the outcome is the
same.  I have my Treo 700W connected to activesync via bluetooth.  When I
leave my computer I take my Treo with me and terminate the activesync
bluetooth connection on the Treo.  I also put my computer into standby.  Upon
my return I cannot reconnect my Treo.  I receive a message "Port Not
Available.  The communications port is not available.  Another program may be
using the port, or it may not be valid."  The message does not tell me
whether the port on the Treo or my computer is unavailable.

I have to reboot my computer and my Treo to reestablish the connection.   I
have tried just rebooting the Treo but that doesn't work.  This negates
advantage of the Standby function!

Any ideas?

Try unchecking the box for "allow connections to one of the following" in
connection settings, hit ok and then go back in, check the box and hit ok.
See if you can connect after that.  If not you may have to uncheck that box
before you standby.
ActiveSync is not very good with power state transitions.  WMDC on Vista
handles this much more gracefully and is much better at not draining your
notebook's battery when you don't have a device connected.  Something to
look forward to :-)

Thanks Gary, that worked.  I never would have thought of unchecking and
checking the box.  Wonder what else is 'hidden' in there!

Gary,

You were helpful before let's see if you can tackle this one.  I have
researched the problems with Activesync and my BT connection further.

when I place my pc into hibernation the same problems that I described
earlier occur except they are not fixed by simply unchecking the box as
below.  I must go through the reboot process for both the pc and the Treo.

I am pursuing this because I use a tablet pc.  I can use the ir to connect
and sync but the ir is not in a convienent place when the tablet is in slate
mode.
