I know this has been discussed many times before in here but I can't
really see many discussions about the final release of Vista and how to
actually get WMDC working WITHOUT installing the Beta 3 that's
available.
I have Windows Vista Business. I can connect my mobile, it's recognised
but only as a media device (ie. in the Sync Centre you can only sync it
with Windows Media Player). The WMDC that is available just now only
allows me to select the type of connection to allow (ie. USB or
Bluetooth).
I know that once you connect your device and it's recognised Vista
should then download WMDC at the next Windows Update, however every
time I do a manual Windows Update no updates are available (my computer
is up to date).
Short of installing the Beta 3 is there any way to get my hands on
WMDC.
I have to put my hand up here and shout a little to say that I actually
think it's ridiculous that this type of update is only available
through Windows Update and not through any other download. Nothing is
perfect and Windows Update is far from perfect so restricting access to
these type of essential features (bear in mind this isn't a patch or
update) is a bit rich. Anybody have the WMDC Windows update still on
their PC that they can make available to us?

Does nobody actually have a reply for this? A resource? A website?
Anything?

I have queried this with Microsoft. If I get a resolution I will
update the group.

WMDC is currently at Beta 3 version. As it is beta code, you have to
manually download it from MS. Once it comes out of beta (I hope very
soon, as I'd prefer not to put beta code on this new, clean machine at
present) it will become available through Windows Update.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/devicecenter.mspx
"The Windows Mobile Device Center Beta is currently only available as a
standalone installer via www.microsoft.com. Future versions will be also
distributed through Windows Update."
Thanks

Hi David,
All of that is only applicable to RC1 though - part of the problem is
nobody (from MS) is saying whether it actually still applies or not.
Some poeple can get teh downloads through Windows Update and some
cannot so it does actually work.
I am running Vista Business, I assume N, as it's the European version
but this isn't expected behaviour for that version as far as I'm
aware.

You don't by any chance run Bussiness N?
In which case this is more or less expected behavior :-(

Hi David,
I have an update on the Vista Business. It's not the N version (as far
as I'm aware) and I don't see how the N version would affect WMDC ...

Ok I'm apparently seeing some of these issues as well. Any suggestions are
welcome.
Clean Vista Ultimate Install, followed by Office 07. One driver update for
sound on a Dell E1705.
New Samsung Blackjack that I began sync with this laptop a few days ago
under XP Pro and had no issues.
Checked around and found out that in order to sync with Vista I need Windows
Mobile Device Center. So I download it from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/devicecenter.mspx and attempt
installation.
It acts if it is going to install then just quits out with no error message
or anything. No application installed. Just stops. Anyone have any
suggestions?
Thanks,
Hydrox
