Samsung Blackjack and Active Sync

Ray - 18 Apr 2008 05:08 GMT When I connect my Samsung Blackjack to my windows XP Pro computer, the device manager shows an network adapter called MITS USB RNDIS which shows that it is not functioning properly. This prevents my Active Sync from functioning. The issue is definitely with my PC not recognizing the mobile phone, since I tried it on my laptop and it worked properly. Does anyone know what driver may be missing in XP that may prevent it from properly recognizing the phone? I have checked with Samsung and have not had any luck with their technical support.

Mesquire - 23 Apr 2008 21:11 GMT Is version 4.5 of the ActiveSync installed? All necessary drivers reside in a subfolder of your ActiveSync installation:

Ray - 24 Apr 2008 00:02 GMT It seems to be a problem with my USB connection recognizing the hardware. The phone shows up as a network adapter with the exclamation sign showing a hardware error. I tried the phone on a friend's computer and the phone showed up in the hardware list with no problem, it just does not show up right on mine. Active Sync needs the hardware to be installed properly before it can even sync. I updated my USB drivers on the motherboard but had no luck. Either XP is missing an .inf file or my motherboard is crapping out. I was hoping someone had an idea of how XP handles mobile devices, my XP installation is suspect. Might have to resort to the sledgehammer reboot..

Before trying anything that, um, irreversible, have you tried deleting the device in the PC's Device Manager, rebooting, and then plugging the Blackjack in again to be re-recognized?
As others have pointed out, you should have Activesync installed first.
Ray - 26 Apr 2008 02:44 GMT I do have ActiveSync installed, yet my PC continues to show a hardware error. At one time I had Siemens Mobile Manager installed on this PC and it worked fine. This program has been removed once I got my Windows device, I just never have been able to connect the Blackjack. My PC recognizes any USB device I connect to the ports except anything that required ActiveSync. Imagine that, Microsoft Windows rejecting another Microsoft program.... One more week of this and a low level format will look attractive so I can start with a clean slate.

Ray - 26 Apr 2008 03:50 GMT I reinstalled Active Sync 4.5 and stil when I conect, there is an error in the Device Manager. I click on the device and I get the following:
Device type: Network Adapters Location: Location 0 (MITS USB RNDIS)
Device Status: This device cannot start (Code 10) Click Troubleshoot to start troubleshooter for this device.

But have you deleted the RNDIS device in the device manager (like I asked a few posts ago)? As long as the error is there, I suspect each connection of the device will attempt to load the "broken" device.
When the device isn't connected, you may need to use the "view devices by connection" tab to see it, since the Device Manager default view tends to only show devices currently connected.
Good luck!
Ray - 30 Apr 2008 03:02 GMT Todd,
I did not fins an RNDIS device in the Device Manager, even when viewing by connection. I even looked in the hidden devices. If there were a way, i would send you a screenshot of the list

Ray - 30 Apr 2008 15:33 GMT When it was connected, I deleted it. However, when I reinstall it it connects as a Windows Mobile Device #x where x keeps increasing. I am now up to device #7 even though devices #1 thru 6 have already been removed. Could this have something to do with a previous device that I had connected? Before I had my Blackjack, I had a Siemens S66 which worked well. I have since removed the Siemens device, but maybe somewhere squirreled away there is something hanging this up. I have checked for and removed any reference to the Siemens unit from my registry. Other than completely erasing my system and reinstalling it, I cannot seem to be able to find the glitch.

I doubt it- I have at least a half-dozen different WinMo devices "installed" on my main PC that don't seem to nterfer with each other. My Activesync installation is a continuous se ies of upgrades from 3.7 to 4.5 (beta) all installed over each other.

I apologize if we've already covered this (too many usenet conversations, too few brain cells left!) but does the Blackjack have a "USB-to-PC" setting in the "connections" menu? If so, uncheck the "Enable Advanced Network Functionality" box which turns off RNDIS on the device and emulates the old serial-over-USB connection method pre-WM5 devices used. This will probably cure the installation error problem.
Ray - 30 Apr 2008 19:13 GMT The only setting that I have in the Blackjack is to whether to use the USB connection for Modem, ActiveSync, or Storage modes.

Is there a newer firmware revision you can download for the Blackjack? Early WM5 deives didn't offer the option to switch from RNDIS to serial USB- that came with WM5 AKU2 and beyond, IIRC.
My wife's T-Mo Dash WM5 Smartphone has the option, but my T-Mo MDA did not until I upgraded it with newer firmware.
Disabling "Advanced Networking" turns off RNDIS mode- something MS apparently didn't consider until a bunch of us had problems with it!
Ray - 01 May 2008 01:52 GMT I will try the update for my Blackjack, then see if this will communicate. I do have a Windows Vista laptop I can use to download the update to the phone. Thanks for pointing me in this direction, I will try it and see if it will work.

I seem to be having the exact same problem as you Ray. I of course have an entirely different variable, which is the End point security software used at my organization. However, the device HAD been working correctly, even with the end point security software running. I think I may have disconnected on accident or some other thing happen that caused the device to be disconnected. Since that has happened, I have the EXACT same symptoms as you do. I may try reinstalling ActiveSync, and resetting my phone to see if that solves the issues.
rehnb - 16 May 2008 15:42 GMT Two actions permitted my BlackJack2 to be recognized by XP Pro. First, to only see storage card, from the BlackJack, got to Settings, Connections, USB and select Storage Card. This is sufficient if all you want to do is see storage card contents. Second option - to see all files and directory structure on the device, install Active Sync 4.5 on the machine you connect device to. The RNDIS driver will be applied and enable you to browse all directories on the device. Chnage the device settings on BlackJack Connections USB to point at Active Sync. Device manager will no longer report unknown device. My Vista Business machine detects the BlackJack with no enduser intervention and allows full access to all files on the device.

I have been hunting forever on the problem and I found the fix on another forum. Worked for me. I'm re-posting it here just to say thanks and spread the solution... tech karma, if you will.

Been looking for the answer for weeks & weeks, like many, many thousands of others. Here's what I've found.
The root of the problem is that ActiveSync 4.x switched to an RNDIS TCP/IP connection method, rather than the old, reliable serial USB. Hence, if you're using firewalls or A/V solutions that in any way fiddle with your TCP/IP interface, ActiveSync would fail. Fail here means "no partnership," "could not connect," etc. etc. etc.
There is a method to change BACK to the old USB serial connection. Some phones/PDAs have the USB-to-PC connection icon & you can turn off "advanced network options" (approximate wording) in there. My HTC PPC6700 did NOT have this icon, so I was DOA.
I went to HTC's website, specified my phone & carrier & downloaded "ActiveSyncMode.sa.CAB." I downloaded it using a WiFi connection, direct to my phone. You could also save it to your SD card & launch it from there. It DID NOT LOAD on the first try, although the file launched. I did a soft reset and tried again & it worked. After install, there was an "ActiveSync Mode" icon under Settings. I switched the connection type to USB Serial and ActiveSync is currently humming away, synching up my media files.
So, find the "ActiveSyncMode.sa.CAB" download at your carrier's or your manufacturer's website. Contact their Tech Support if needed. Get it onto your phone via web or storage card. Load it up (soft reset if necessary) and live happily every after.
I found the ActiveSync Mode info on a Windows Mobile developer website -- not easy to find. So, if you have accounts in other forums where this topic is discussed, please repost this entry there. I intend to repost this in a few places, but wider distribution is better. There are lots of people trying hard resets, disabling firewall SW, etc., without getting anywhere

All necessary drivers >reside in a subfolder of your ActiveSync installation: I got a BlackJack II about a month ago. Way, way better than my Treo 650! I just learned about this group and this is my first post.
Did I say that I really like the BJ II?
One problem. First some background. I couldn't get Activesync to install off the CD. Each time I ran the program, I got some kind of "invalid program" error. So Samsung support told me to download this program from the MS website, which I did. And it seems to work just fine for me. (knock on wood.) I'm not sure that this install method is causing my problem, but I thought I should mention it, just in case.
But I have a real problem with my reminders, and even Samsung Level 3 support doesn't have a clue as to how to fix it. There are actually two problems with the reminders.
1. If I am entering data into any application, or trying to send a text message, about once a minute the reminder list will pop up and ALL the reminders scroll through. There seems to no way to set a time interval for this popup.
For me, reminders include appointments, tasks, and follow-up flags set on things like email messages.
2. The second problem is that when the reminders pop up, they ALL pop up, not just the ones that became active. On my Outlook 2003 system, these reminders work just as you would expect them to. But on my Samsung BJ II, I see reminders pop up for FUTURE times, or recurring reminders that I have "completed" and are set to recur at a future date/time.
This is very annoying. The only thing that Samsung Level 3 support could tell me was to run SCANPST. I do that on a daily basis, because Outlook or one of my add-ins, has this nasty habit of corrupting the PST data file. Also, Samsung support kept saying that they were not responsible for "my data."
What do I do? This two-part problem just totally ruins the pleasure of using this device.
