I've just noticed that (in AS Version 4.5.0 ) if I click Explore I get
a folder titled 'C:\ - Microsoft Internet Explorer'. Where does IE
come into the scene? (I don't have it open, and don't even use it
normally.)

On your PC, Internet Explorer is used as the viewer to see data stored on a
drive or device.
