Dear group,

I have a new Smartphone (HTC Touch Diamond, Windows Mobile 6.1) and
ActiveSync configured to sync with an Exchange Server.
The problem is that ActiveSync is always trying to connect via a mobile
network - even though I have established a properly working WLAN connection.
It seems that this device is only able to sync via mobile network or via
PC-cable.
I have had other Windows-Mobile devices, where Exchange sync via WLAN worked
without problems.
Is there any way to tell ActiveSync, which connection to use? Or may this be
a branding problem ? (I have Vodafone as my provider)

Thanks in advance,
Holger.

Hi,
Exchange ActiveSync is only supported over the cellular networks.  It is not
supported over Wi-Fi connections due to the battery requirements.  So once
you start to sync, it will continue using that network due to the design
which uses an open connection with an extended timeout.

Dear Chris,

I have another Device (HTC TyTN, WinMobile 5) which activeSyncs Exchange via
WiFi.
What is the difference? And what do you mean with "Battery requirements"?

Thanks for your help, Holger.

Hi,
Wi-Fi uses more power than using cellular networks.  Also, once the
connection to the server is made, it requires you to use the same IP until
it is restarted.    So you can soft reset your device and sync via wi-fi or
shut off the cellular radio and reconnect with it as well.

Dear Chris,

restarting does not solve the problem. AS seems to force the sync via
cellular network.
WiFi is working, the battery is full, but AS ignores the WiFi connection.
Below, you wrote: "Exchange ActiveSync is only supported over the cellular
networks."
But I activesync Exchange via Wifi for 2 years! Is your statement only valid
for WM6?

Holger.

Here's a reply I penned in the PPC newsgroup a couple of days ago that
might help.  It mostly deals with how IE Mobile and Messaging utilize the
Connections applet.  Keep in mind that Exchange over Activesync uses the
same conectivity "rules" as IE Mobile rather than Messaging, however.

Hope it helps...

Dear Todd,

this looked really promising, but I haven't reached to solve the problem.

Yours, Holger.

Can you tell us what "networks" are listed in the two drop down bars in the
"Select Networks" screen?
