Windows Mobile Device Center Fails to Sync with Communication 0x80072745

There are dozens and dozens of posts for this all over the Internet and no one seems to have a solution that genuinely works.  I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 with Windows Mobile Device Center v6 or v6.1 and I have a Samsung SCH-i760 running Windows Mobile v6.1.  When I connect my device and attempt to sync it fails and an event is posted in the application log that says, "Windows Mobile-based device failed to connect due to communication (0x80072745) failure (see data for failure code)."  I've tried everything:  uninstalling/reinstalling WMDC, uninstalling/disabling firewalls, hard resets of my device, deletion/recreation of partnerships and nothing works.  The only way I can get my device to sync is to delete its partnership and create a new partnership, after which it syncs once and then goes back to failing again.  Someone out there must have a true solution to this problem.  Please help.

Have you tried disabling RNDIS?  (Start/Settings/Connections(Tab)/USB-to-
PC, then uncheck "Enable Advanced Network Functionality.")  This switches
the device's connection method from a USB-network device to a USB-serial
device, which seems to get along with more PCs.
Karine - 02 Oct 2008 01:45 GMT
Yes, I've always had RNDIS disabled.

This looks promising:

Someone noticed they were getting an exclaimation point in the Device
Manager and had success by deleting the device, then reconnecting.
Karine - 05 Oct 2008 02:35 GMT
The link you posted discussed bangs in the device manager which I've never
had and it discussed plugging directly into the USB of the PC which I tried
and that didn't help.

Dear all,

Might have a work around for this...

I have a T-Mobile MDA Vario III ( HTC TyTN II / Kaiser ).

What I do is this.

1) Connect Via Bluetooth to my PC, this always connects and syncs
2) Disconnect after sync.
3) Plug in cable to sync via USB, PC always sees the PPC and syncs!

Sometimes I plug in the USB cable once BT connection established , the BT
connection is maintained and the PPC is charged.

Yes!  This allowed the device to connect with Vista correctly again.  It was
syncing with XP fine and just quit working on Vista.  Somewhere the Device
defaulted back to using RNIDS

Hi,
Please provide the name and version of the software that you have on your PC
such as:

1. Software firewall
2. Antispyware Software
3. Antivirus Software
4. Is this PC a part of a domain?
5. Are you logged in as a local Administrator account?

Exactly the same mess with me.
Not using enhanced network functionality is not an option of course..
My AntiVirus is Avira and this is where i'm working.. ;)
I also uninstalled our antivirus completely, rebooted, no change :-/
No domain member and yes i'm the local admin.

The response to your questions are as follows:

1. Software firewall - Windows Live OneCare (Even with it completely
uninstalled and the Windows firewall disabled the problem still existed.)
2. Antispyware Software - Windows Live OneCare (Even with it completely
uninstalled the problem still existed.)
3. Antivirus Software - Windows Live OneCare (Even with it completely
uninstalled the problem still existed.)
4. Is this PC a part of a domain? - No

Hi,
What e-mail account are you using?  When I google the error it is coming
back about MSN Messenger.

Also, do you have any VPN or use a VPN to connect Outlook to your work?

Not using Outlook at all but yes i'm using Windows Live Messenger.
Please google more and read initial post again. To me this is not an Outlook
issue imho but either a major sync bug in Mobile Device Center, maybe a
driver issue with VistaSP1 or a bug in WM6 which occurs when syncing with
latest Vista.

-> fully patched Windows Vista Ultimate SP1
-> Windows Mobile Device Center v6 / v6.1 (latest)
-> MDA compact III just updated to WM6
-> well known communication (0x80072745) error with EventID: 8 from
  RapiMgr
-> no AntiVirus
-> no firewall
-> local admin
-> no VPN connection from that machine
-> reboots / hard resets of both computer and mobile device
-> no chance

Hi again, sorry for the delay.
I searched the internet and using WMDC 6.0 insted of 6.1 seems to work for
some people. Not for me.
I played around. I noticed that my device (T-Mobile MDA compact III =  o2
XDA orbit) is not visible in device manager after some few seconds after
plugin (driver installation) any more and the well known error 'Windows
Mobile-based device failed to connect due to communication (0x80072745)
failure (see data for failure code)' with Event-ID 8 from RapiMgr appears in
ApplicationLog!
So, i tried *not* to use the enhanced network stuff (USB2PC) on my mobile
device but the behaviour and error was just the same :-/
Again: I uninstalled any WDMC on my Vista32Ultimate completely. This means
also this Mobile Adapter NIC was removed. I rebooted and plug my device in my
DELL Latitude D810. During driver installation the device *is* shown in
device manager as a portable device and also recognized as my 'MDA comact
III'. Also the device is shown in windows explorer as a volume at this point
of time. Then, (no matter if enhanced networking on my device is ON or OFF)
after approx. 5 (five) seconds the device is not shown anywhere any more and
i had a look at my ApplicationLog.. see above.
The behaviour as described is reproducible ever since i flashed my device to
Windows Mobile 6 Professional (CE OS 5.2.16.20 (Build 18125.0.4.2)

What do you suggest how to proceed at this point of time? Driver issue?? How
to debug this RapiMgr error (DLL!) ?

Did you try plugging your MDA into the another USB port directly on the PC?

Hi, yes. i tried to plug the MDA into different USB Ports but without success
and the same resulting error 8 from RapiMgr. BTW the services you metioned
some time before are all up and running. Do you have another idea/suggestion
- I will try another USB calbe meanwhile (-;

Neither the hint from Thomas syncing via Bluetooth first nor using another
USB cable (also the original one which recently worked) did the trick :(

are exactly the same as on my laptop! :(

finally i did it - i bricked my phone completely (not even got into
bootloader!)
for god's sake i got a new one just today since this was not my private
phone (-:
Ok then, brandnew MDA compact III from T-Mobile in front of me running WM
5.0 (!) (5.1.342 Build 15096.3.0.0). Plugged it into my laptop and.. *no*
problem at all!! Device is resident in device manager, no error from RapiMgr
and syncs and everything is working like a charm. Now there is this update
from T-Mobile available to WM6... (-;

like for all others my glorious times of successful syncing are gone too.
The same errors from RapiMgr again even with WM5 on my MDA.

I won my own domain and my email is hosted with CrystalTech.

I tried removing Windows Live Messenger and that didn't make any difference.

I'm not using any VPN software.

I uninstalled/reinstalled WMDC as instructed at

Unfortunately, after two weeks of successful syncing the same problem has returned and even the process of uninstalling/reinstalling isn't working now.  This is such a common problem someone out there must have the final solution rather than all of these constantly unsuccessful attempts we all keep making.

Hi.  Have you been able to resolve this problem yet?  I am having a very
similar problem where WMDC 6 and 6.1 will connect to my my Samsunf i760, and
I can even windows explorer or File Management and manipulate the files on my
i760.  But when it comes to synching the i760 to Outlook I continually get
errors.  I have one all the uninstall and reinstall items just as you have
listed.

I was only able to sync once when I first installed Vista SP1 and WMDC.  If
I go to another PC having XP and Activesync, I am able to sync the i760 with
Outlook.  As you have said, I have seen this problem all over the blogs on
the Internet, so you would think that someone or Microsoft would have solved
the problem or created a fix.  this is a very worrisome problem - everyone
wants to carry their Outllook data with them or they would have purchased a
different phone.

Please help if you gained a resolution.  Thanks.

Hello all,
After reading all of the entries it looks like the mobile OS in the phone is suspect. "next" you mention all is good until you took a new phone from WM5 to WM6. Telephone companies and phone manufactures buy Windows Mobile and make adjustments for there purposes... suspect you find other with the same phone and see what there situation is. "Karine" I would do the same.

I have Ulitmate Vista SP1 and a HTC Touch and once in a while I have a sync error which shows up in WMDC for which I click to get more info and the next thing I know it is sync'ing. There is a website where you might find persons with similar phones and carriers: ppcgeeks.com

Best bet is to find person's with the same phone from your telephone company.

Another thoughts:
- be sure your desktop is updated from Microsoft.
- I always use an account other then Administrator!
- unplug your phone when you logout or reboot, this always messes up my sync' for some reason. Suspect it likes the thumb drives...

Hope you find your problem!

Hello to all of you, i had the same problem and i'd like you to check the
sync settings of your device. mobile device settings -->change content sync
settings-->Sync settings. Mine was set to exchange server, set that radio
button to Windows PC.
This should do the trick. Have a nice one and enjoy
