Windows Mobile 6.1 and mp4

According to several posts I've found elsewhere on the Net, the windows media
player application on Windows Mobile 6.1, which is installed on my AT&T Tilt,
is supposed to play mp4 files natively.  Since my 5,000 or so songs
originally ripped via iTunes are all in mp4 format, I really want to avoid
having to go the conversion route.  However, I've loaded a bnch of mp4s to
the storage card of my device and they are not visible in Windows media
Player. (Of course, I am changing the directory of the library to the storage
card.)  I'd sure appreciate a helping hand.  Many thanks in advance!

The TCPMP player (available from Picard's site) supports MP4 (AAC)
audio playback : http://picard.exceed.hu/tcpmp/test/

If the codecs aren't installed for WMP on WM6.1 by the manufacturer,
then you probably won't be able to play it directly in WMP

Thanks, Neil.  According to the destination of your link "This open source
media player project is discontinued."  (Darn!)   But my original question
persists: if WMP on Windos Mobile 6.1 is "supposed to" support MP4 nativey,
as I've confirmed from multiple locations, why is it not recognizing mp4
files?

Still, the links aren't discontinued, because that's Picards mirror
site for the discontinued project ;-)

As I said, it's down to which DirectShow filters the phone manfacturer
chooses to include with the device, which are generally part of the
ROM image and so, not use modifiable (at least not in a way I know how
to).

MPEG4 comes in a range of conformance levels too, and you might have
(for example) Simple Profile (SP) video support programmed in by the
device manfacturer, but not sat Main or Advanced profile conformance.

http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?title=MPEG-4&redirect=no
Check out the MPEG4 parts 2 and 10 listed there for details

Bearing in mind the PPC is a fairly low power device, it seems
reasonable - though irritating - that the manufacturer places limits
on playback capabilities.

If you can find a working DivX player for the PPC WM6 then that could
help, as DivX mirrors some additional conformance levels from MPEG4.

Thanks and .... sigh.   Why can't we just all play nicely together.  I spend
so much time sorting out problems caused by the very technology that is
supposed to make life easier!  I think I'll just rip a couple of CDs that I
want to have access to from my phone via WMP and be done with it.  I
appreciate your help and curse the moon.

Cheers back.

"mp4" confuses the crowd.  "m4a" does too, but
not as many.  For audio, 99.9% of the world uses
"m4a".  If you plan on putting 5000 songs ON your
PDA, there's only one player that handles that
many (as easily and as effortlessly as if there
were only 10 songs), and wouldn't you know it,
it just so happens to be listed in my sig.

That's funny because I heard that 99.9% of the world uses mp3...
