Does the Real Player for Windows Mobile support http streams? The version
for PPC2002 doesn't. This can be a real (no pun intended) pain if you are
using a wireless LAN and router to connect your PPC to the internet. The
problem is that most (all?) wireless Routers that support NAT don't/can't
support rtsp either.
The desktop version of the Real player doesn't have this problem so
currently I'm using Windows Media Encoder on my desktop PC to convert and
re-broadcast the stream! I play the station on my desktop computer using the
desktop version of the RealOne player (I assume the player automatically
drops down to http protocol?). Then I set up WME to use my sound card as the
source and broadcast the stream on a suitable port. Then I simply fire up
WMP on my PPC and do an open URL or set it up as a favourite. After
buffering for a few seconds it works!

Actually I have no problems with rtsp over nat, real player on my ppc can
play rtsp streams just fine on my network and i'm behind a nat firewall. As
a matter of fact I can play rtsp streams on my wireless laptops and wireless
ppc's. Real player is the same for ppc 2002 & 2003 and that's the problem.
Most sites are using http streaming not rtsp so real player on the ppc is
just about useless.

I'd love to know how to get that working as everything I've managed to find
on the subject (which isn't much) says it doesn't work.
Did you have to make any changes to your router/firewall? Do you need uPnP
support etc
That->Kid - 10 Jan 2004 20:20 GMT
I didn't have to configure anything on the router at all. I don't use uPnP
and have it disabled on my router as well. The one thing that I have found
was that it's hard to stream some real audio rtsp streams onver bluetooth.
I was trying to help someone over at brighthand with this. I was able to
play the video stream fine on my ipaq over wifi but when I tried to do it
over bluetooth I got an error. If i'm ont mistaken the video came from
reals ppc site which is access from real on the ppc. I'll hunt down some
rtsp streams and give them a try then post them here so you can give them a
try. Maybe we can find a way to get you going.

For a couple of real audio streams that work on a ppc see:
http://www.pocketpcmedia.nl/real.php3
I still dont really know what NAT is, but on my wireless linksys router a/p
, the realmedia links work great.
When my ppc is stationed in the cradle however, realone for ppc doesnt seem
to recognize the media. It works over wifi and bluetooth.
Also take in mind that realone for pocketpc doesnt support streams with a
higher bitrate then 200kbs

Anyone want to try the BBC radio streams on their wireless PPC and NAT
router for me?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/
If you can get any to work it must be my set up (D-Link DI-624).

Ok I'm listening to a stream right now from the link you posted. Here were
my steps.
1 Entered url into pocket ie
2 Selected listen to Radio 1
3 New page opens with embedded real player but that doesn't work on the ppc
so I scroll down and select "Having
problems listening live? Click Here>>>
4 Download prompt for rlive.ram comes up and I click yes (make sure the open
file after download box is checked)
5 Real player opens, starts loading the stream and it starts playing.
I'm using a different nat router now than I was before but it works with
either. Give that a try and let me konw how you make out.

No luck for me. .I have an IPAQ 3660 upgraded to PPC2002, Win Media 8 and an
802.11b WLAN.
At step 5 the player loads and says "connecting" then "loading". There is
lots of activity on the WAN led of my router but after a short wait the
player status says "Shuttingdown" and I get Error; "Response or data from
server timed out". Same thing on both Radio 1 and 4.
My player preferences -> Network are :
802.11b
11mbps
No RTSP proxy
Out of interest what do your connection settings look like? I have
everything set to "Work settings" and "My network card connects to work". My
ISP's proxy details are set correctly.

I use a vpn to get to my work and home network so my settings are different.
I have the top one set to bluetooth which works with my phone and the bottom
one set to my home vpn. I have a ipaq 3760 with ppc 2002 on it, I'll load
realplayer on it and see happens.

Hi,
I'm using an iPAQ 3970 WM2003 and step 4 (below) doesn't work
completely. Is there a system setting I need to enable, or something else?
Thanks, Bill

I see the "open file after d/l" box but it doesn't allow me to place a
checkmark in it. Anyone know why??

You may need to go into activesync and make sure that passthrough is set to
"internet"

That could actually be a problem with real player itself. I had a stream
that I was testing for someone that worked fine over wifi but didn't work
over bluetooth. The stream wasn't that large of a stream at all and
should've been fine over bluetooth but real wouldn't play it.

Bill,
I just tried my steps with my 3970 and it did work. when I clicke
the link on the site I got a download prompt for r1live.ram then i selected
"yes" for pocketie to download the file and then open after download. I did
discover that the clip wouldn't play while in the cradle which is the
problem Luck One is having. So it seems that real player has issues playing
some clips over bluetooth and thru the cradle. I'll have to charge my 3760
up with ppc 2002 and try it with wifi, I don't have a cradle for my 3760
anymore.

Thanks for the info. I hate to beat a dead horse but what happens on my
iPAQ is that the rlive.ram file requests the download and I see the
"open file after d/l" box but the checkbox doesn't allow me to place a
checkmark in it. Subsequently the file doesn't come in and the stream
never plays. I'm wondering if it's a system setting on the iPAQ WM2003??

That's strange although i've had that happen to me before but I don't
remember what I did to correct it. So once you select yes to download the
file nothing happens? If it won't let you open the file after download from
that prompt try opening real player and do a file open and see if it finds
the file. Also what version of real player are you running? From the about
screen in real on my 3970 it says 2.0.0.28

Eric,
RealOne begisn to load the file then I get the error "response or data
from server timed out" and it stops loading anything.
The version I have loaded onto the iPAQ 3970 is also 2.0.0.28.
Any ideas?? Thanks, Bill

It looks like it might be our router or it's settings (I'm using a D-Link
DI-624). See this thread...

This site explains the error (but doesn't offer a solution)

rvertimedout
"Response or data from server timed out

I've just spent 3 hours adjusting with my routers firewall settings along
the lines mentioned in the following article..
http://www.optimalstream.net/docs/Firewalls.html
but nothing worked.
In the end I put my PPC in the DMZ briefly and it still doesn't work! I
still get "response or data from server timed out". This both from the BBC
streams and those on the Real Player test site.
Because someone mentioned changing the settings to CDMA I also tried that
(eg setting up the player preferences -> Network to CDMA and lowish bit
rates). That didn't work either although if I set it too slow I get "clip
not playable" instead (or something like that).
Is there another player that I could try that will handle RealMedia streams?

Well I've given up. Tried it from the iPAQ cradle and the same thing
happened...timeout error. I've tweaked every possible setting allowable
with the software on my pc and the ppc with no success. I removed
RealOne and will simply live without streaming multimedia unless I read
of a cure.
