I want to transfer music from my PC to my iPAQ (Pocket PC). But when I go to file File > Copy> Copy to Portable Device, I get the error message: Windows Media Player cannot detect a connected portable device. Connect your portable device, and try again. THE error message ID number is C00D1179. I have Windows Media Player Version 9.00.00.2980 and Windows 98 as my operating system. Please help.

And this is happening with ActiveSync on?
Anyway, here is what you can do... When running WMP9 go to the Copy to
Device screen and see if all the folders appear including your Pocket PC and
your Pocket PC's storage card.
If it shows and you can view the folders, then you should be able to copy
files to it.

Gosh. I have had this so many times. I never once managed to get my
Ipaq recognised.
I copy mp3s from my pc folder and paste into the pocket pc folder for
instant transfer.
I find the volume of Mp3s very low but that may be nothing to do with
this
