Mp3 Woes

Yesterday, I downloaded several MP3s of birdsong, from:

        <http://www.birdforum.net/bsong.htm>

(e.g. Blackcap,. Willow Warbler, Nightingale)

via my PC, onto my iPAQ. When I try to play them (by tapping on them on
file explorer), I get a

Windows Media Player cannot find the file. You may not be
connected to the network, the file may have moved, or you may
have entered an incorrect file name or path

They play OK on my PC, and I have transferred them from the iPAQ to a
second desktop, where they also pay OK.

I have just deleted them all, and downloaded them again, with the same
results.

Other MP3s play OK

Any suggestions?

How are you copying them?
Is the bitrate of the files supported by MP?

I first saved them direct to the PDA, then to my desktop, and cut and
pasted them.

I wasn't aware that any weren't.

They're:

       MPEG 1.0 layer 3
       64kbit, 163 frames
       32000Hz Mono

according to WinAmp.

I can't remember the details now but when I checked before buying my pda the
range for mp3's was not as much as offered by the desktop program I used,
but wasn't a problem to me. There are other players with support for mp3's,
why not try them out?- Winampaq for example.
Or convert the files to media players native format (wma) or different
sample rate? There are a number of players can do this, I use dBpowerAMP
Music Converter. I would guess that a conversion to stereo might do the
trick, but there are other players you could try.

Theres an MS community that may be able to offer assistance too.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/default.aspx
(bottom of the menu on the left).

Winampaq is free, you can get it here:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/pocketpc/winampaq.html
It's a standalone program, I had to create my own start menu item, but it
can be run by navigating to the file using explorer.

Thank you. That plays them, so it does seem to be a bitrate issue.

Disappointingly, the "home" URL for WinampPAQ, cited at the above URL,
is 404 - do you know if it is still being developed (v0.93 is the one
available for download)?

I've found one bug, so far, which is that it only seems to recognise
folders one level down from "my documents".

Try PocketMusic which is FOC and being developed with new versions coming
out.

The last version of Winampro is around a year old, perhaps they aren't
developing it now. I thought it would be a good bet for most bitrates, more
likely than the MS offering as they want people to use their format, wma.
I'd be interested to hear if PocketMusic supports your bitrate though. I
still like it that winampro is a standalone program.

Sounds like the same old PPC problem:  My Documents.
