I have some video files in avi format and would like to
convert them to wmv so that I can play them on my pocket
pc. Does anyone know of a free conversion progam that will
convert them?
Thanks

Or download Microsoft Windows Media Encoder Series 9. This has a lot more
options for customizing the compression of video. And it's free also! Have a
look at it on http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmedia

Besides Windows Media Encoder (which works very well and even has built in
presets for pocketPC), the other option is to use PocketMVP (freeware) to
play the .avi files as is.

You can also usefully convert with Real Producer (now Helix Producer)
from real networks, and play them with the real player for PPC. About
all it's useful for as it doesn't support rtsp streams from media
servers :-p

Cheers - Neil.

I had problems with windows encoder - sound and video were way out of synch
(probably my fault of course) however I tried TMPGenc and the following
guide and it was easy .....

Good luck, Shaun.

I installed PocketMVP on my iPaq 5555 running WM2003.  It will only play
small AVI files.  When I try to play a file larger than 50 MB, the ipaq dies
and I have to do a soft reset.  I have started converting all my DVD's to
AVI then convert them to WMV using the Windows Media Encoder.  The only way
I have found to make it work.
