"Open Path" functionality of File Explorer

I'm trying to figure out how to configure my system (either my Treo 700p or
my home network / laptop) to access my network via the "Open Path" command of
File Explorer. Of course, there is no embedded help for that, there is no
documentation for all the standard features of Smartphone 5.0, nor is there
anywhere on the web that I can find that says anything about the "Open Path"
command other than it's there and some people use it.

Are there any technical reference articles anywhere or (god forbid) an
actual full and in-depth manual that owners of this nugget of Microsoft
technology could use to wade there way through the fog? The crappy users
manual that Verizon supplies is barely sufficient for someone as technically
savvy as my mother.

First, I can't speak for "Smartphone" but since you may have a
"phoneedition"...

The primary problem that most people have with this is that it does not
support "browsing shares" ...you have to know and enter the fully
qualified name of the computer offering the share... for example

\\my-desktopbox\

Once you connect to that computer, you can then browse to that
computer's shares.

In addition, you can copy files to and from network shares using file
explorer, but you can't open them directly... for example, tapping a wma
file on the network will not play it on your ppc.

Resco Explorer offers more options

Yes, I suppose it is a "phone edition" of windows mobile.

The info you provided was exactly what I've seen other places. Of course, I
know how to put in fully qualified network computer names, and that's what
I've been doing without success. The same qualified name that another
computer on the net can use to get to my computer (\\enpower\) when attempted
via the Open Path command only yields the error message:

The network path was not found.

and:

Network resource cannot be found or you do not have permission to access the
network.

The connection process never got far enough to ask for a username / password
(if needed) so I'm not sure what's happening.

Now, I've checked the firewall settings and everything is cool but, just in
case, I turned them all off without connection success.

Is there some other configuration point I need to modify? I'm currently
connecting via RNDIS. Switching to serial USB seems to make no difference
with the connectivity. I don't know if I need to change anything in the RNDIS
network connection to make the connection. I know my computer has several
sharepoints with relatively loose network access security.

FYI, I've been a computer consultant for over 20 years. I helped develop
OS/2 and NT device architecture and network protocols for Microsoft, IBM, and
several other OEMs. I worked for MSFT for 4 years as a consultant and as an
employee for 7 more years. Please feel free to send full technical data or a
technical manual to help me solve this problem.

Thanks!
Greg

My first guess would be that you don't have network connectivity...
suggest installing vxUtil from http://cam.com and confirming a valid ip
and the ability to ping to and from the two devices.

Just so you don't feel bad... doesn't mean a thing <lol>  PPC network
issues confound the best it people available, so, welcome to the crowd.

riiighttttt... as a wise sage once said, "Life ain't like that"  You are
here (the best place imho) and we will point you to google and elsewhere
to find the pieces you need... I have a few ppc ts ramblings at
http://BevHoward.com/NetWk.htm and there are many others

I do have an IP address for my Treo connection (169.254.2.2) that's exposed
in my computer's Network Connections list and the RNDIS parameter address is
listed as 169.254.2.1 on the Treo itself.

It is true that I can't ping to either the 2.1 or 2.2 addresses from my
laptop even though one of the addresses is exposed on my laptop. Is there a
connectivity piece that I'm missing?

True, this does seem to be the "best" place to find out information that
could have been answered in minutes if it were printed in a technical
reference manual rather than hours or days via someone who knows the "secret
configuration formulas and parameters".

If I have another issue just with navigation in the messaging application,
should I post a new thread or submit it to you here? Basically, how do I
switch from Inbox to Outbox without touching the screen? What about Help too?
How do I access the Contents button at the bottom without touching the screen?

Thanks,
Greg

bingo... that's the "default" ip address when the unit is unable to
connect and establish a dhcp address...

Time to work on getting the connection issues resolved since the above
indicates you don't have network connectivity.

This is still connected, including getting your connection resolved...

replying to any post will continue the thread below the message you are
replying to...

"composing" a new message will start a new thread even if they subject
line is the same.

additional question...

I assumed that you were connected in some other manner than an
activesync connection such as wifi.  Are you trying to do this through
an activesync connection or while you are connected via activesync?

If so, suggest you use your pc's file explorer to copy files from the
network to and from your ppc via the activesync connection.

Establish a wifi (ethernet) connection to the network _while not
connected via activesync_ and your issues should be resolved.
