Orange SPV M3100 problems

Hi all

My colleague has recently got a Orange SPV M3100 here in the UK and is
having loads of little problems with it. I myself have an XDA II Mini S and
don't appear to have simlar troubles.

The bluetooth seems very unreliable and he has tried different headsets. I
personall don't use a BT headset

There are many strange problems on the phone like when an SMS arrives and
you goto view it sometime you cannot  open the message in the Inbox
application. tapping it several times makes no difference. you can however
close the inbox app so the device does not appear to have "locked". I've
never had this on my XDA

Sometimes the right hand side of the onscreen keyboard stops working. you
still get the key tap sound but back space/enter etc do not work. I have had
this on my xda about once or twice in twelve months but the SPV seems to do
it quite often.

A soft reset tempoarily cures these and other strange problems. apart from
BT

I do notice that in poor signal strength areas these devices seem to
'struggle' and I assume this is because the phone module MUST take priority
over all other functions and the device appears to 'freeze' for a few
seconds. This does seems to effect mine from time to time.

All i'm really asking are these common faults with the SPV M3100 ? I'm just
trying to narrow down if this is a one off dodgy device or the Orange front
end software is quite buggy ? or thats just the way these TyTn devices
perform

I am a technical person but he isn't and having come form a 'proper' phone
Nokia 6310i it is driving him nuts !

Thanks in advance for any thoughts

Kind Regards

Andrew

If I'm right, this device is an HTC Wizard, isn't it? AKA the T-Mobile
MDA Vario?
You need to find out if it's hardware or software - if it's new, Orange
are usually pretty good about returns so I'd start there.  earlier ROM
versions had variable quality GSM phone software, later ones are much
improved for performance and stability.
also check if your mate's installed any 3rd party software that might
conflict.

a (warranty-voiding!) option is to flash the ROM with a later spec one.

If I were you, I'd have a look at www.xda-developers.com and
search/post on the forums.  I've upgraded the ROM on my MDA to "Mr
Clean" which is *much* faster than the original and also unbranded.

Thanks for the tips.

Yes my O2 XDA II Mini S = HTC Wizard  and  Orange SPV M3100 = HTC TyTn

The Orange phone is about 2 months old and mine is about 9 months old

So the devices are far from identical but I would have expected similar
performance from 2 WM2005 devices ? There is no 3rd party software on his
and mine has TomTom and a couple of other small apps. Where as mine is fine
most of the time his just keeps freezing and doing strange things on a
regualr basis.

I wish I could swap sim cards between them to test each others out but they
are locked to their respective networks.

Cheers

Andrew

hmm, well, you could always unlock it via the orange developers site or
using lokiwiz (see www.xda-developers.com - you'll need to
register)....
his does sound screwed though.  have you done a hard reset on the iffy
one yet?  if not, try that first...

Have you actually tried it?  In UK O2 stopped locking its devices to the
network quite some time ago, long enough that I doubt any Mini S would be
locked.  The Orange one may well be though.
