I was wondering how files, applications and the such are transferred
to a phone connected via GSM/CDMA? If one is downloading a binary is
it loaded via SMS in pieced together messages or is some other
technology used.

If there are any simple sample code projects out there that implement
this transfer I would appreciate a link of information as to where it
is.

Thanks

Essentially, the cellular connection methods are the same as network
connections, they are just data pipes and have no native abilities to
install or control...

ppc's are "client only" os's so there is no default way to copy files
"to" a ppc's memory as on a windows os device, but, transfer methods
such as email, etc can be used.  That limit is one reason that ppc's
don't have the level of security concerns that desktops have.

As for installations, one option is to generate a cab file, put that on
a web site as a link, then, the user taps the link, the file gets
downloaded and the user then has the option of executing the cab and
installing it.
