I transferred my files from a PDA on PocketPC 2003 to a Samgsung SCH-i760
and found that my longer Tasks, which I use for general rambling have been
truncated. What is the maximum size for a Task on a Smartphone (obviously
shorter than on the PDA!)

Try this:
Open a registry editor on your device and go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Activesync\.
Set the value to 20480 (the default value is 5120).
Restart your device
Let me know if this helps.

I copied the contents to a Word document to count characters and it stopped
at 4096.
Where is the registry editor on a smartphone? I'd like to try fixing
this...
