o2 xda II sound problem

I have what I assume is a hardware problem that is going to require
service, but I thought I'd check and see if maybe there isn't
something I can do myself. My phone has been operating without trouble
for months. Today, I used the earpiece and when a call came in and I
pulled out the earpiece so I could use the phone without it, I could
hear nothing. This had happened to me previously with the first
edition o2 xda on ocassion, but after reinserting the earpiece plug
then pulling it back out, the normal speaker function returned. Not
this time. I did a reset. Still no fix.

When the phone rings, I can't hear the ringing or the person on the
other end when I answer the call. Ditto all other sound functions:
With the earpiece, I can hear everything fine. Without it, all is
mute. I have checked all the obvious things -- the sound and
notification settings, the mute button. I can't fix it. I fear that
I'm going to have to exercise the warranty, which will be a real pain.
Any advice that spares me this experience much appreciated.

I'm having the same problem with my Siemens SX56 PPCPE.
No sound at all anywhere on the device unless my ear piece is plugged in.
I don't really want to set everything to vibrate so please help if anyone
knows what's going on.
Mine's about 2 years old and pretty well used.
The sound stopped this morning after receiving about 70 text messages over
the night.

Sounds like the same issue that affected the SPV Smartphones (also made by
HTC) It's a mechanical fault with the earphone socket, some users have
reported success inserting and removing the headphone, using compressed ait
to remove dust etc but if all else fails it's a warranty repair.

I just wanted to write back and say that the problem with MY sound was in
the earpiece jack as stated above. A little bit of blowing and plugging in
and out of the earpiece and I had sound again. It kinda scared me there as
my device is 2 years old and not under any kind of warranty.
Thanks Darren for your help,
