John Martin - 29 Nov 2003 13:49 GMT I've been trying for months to set up bluetooth access between my PCs and iPaq 3970 - i'm beginning to wonder whether this is actually possible! (and if it isn't, why not?!) :
My set-up is as follows:
Machine A : WinXP "server" - running ICS. Has a LAN card and MSI USB bluetooth key (with latest drivers). Network connections (bluetooth and ethernet) are bridged.
Machine B : Connected via wired lan to machine A. Runs ActiveSync.
Machine C (laptop) : Also has an MSI bluetooth key - running winxp, i can browse the internet and have full network access from this machine using bluetooth. (This works beautifully!)
iPaq : This is where i have problems! I want to be able to connect to the bluetooth network access on machine B, just like i can with the laptop, so that I can get access to network drives and use the shared internet connection. Ideally, i'd also like to then be able to activesync with machine A, over the network. Is this possible with the iPaq? It seems that bluetooth networking is not a problem with the usb bluetooth adapters, because the WinXp laptop has no problems connecting to the network via bluetooth. (I'm actually sending this message over bluetooth network now!)....
The iPaq has no problems finding machine B, and has been paired. I can "connect to network access" - and it comes up on the iPaq saying it's authenticated and then "connected" - but doesn't seem to have access to anything! I've tried disabling firewalls on each machine, which has made no difference. Although the iPaq is supposedly connected, it doesn't seem to do anything, and can't be seen from any other machine on the network either. Could this be anything to do with the network WorkGroup name? I haven't found anywhere on the iPaq to specify a workgroup (all i can find is the "device name").
I've also tried manually specifying the ip address of the server (192.168.0.1) in each of the (very confusing) "network adapter" properties under iPaq "connections" but this didn't seem to make any difference... Why must the config on the iPaq be so confusing!? Is this any better in ppc2003?
Does anyone know how/if this can be done? I've read various "guides" already, including those at geekzone, but can't seem to find anything that helps.
The iPaq is a 3970, running PPC2002 (still waiting for my upgrade that i ordered ages ago... ;(
Any help greatly appreciated - this is the last time i'm going to struggle with this. I've tried it so many times before without luck... I just can't believe that if the laptop can do it, then why should the iPaq have so many problems?! grrr
John.
David Hettel MS MVP - Mobile Devices - 29 Nov 2003 19:33 GMT John if you are running the 3970 PPC 2002, with the standard Bluetooth drivers I do not think you can do what you want to. By upgrading the Bluetooth drivers you could get a "Bluetooth PAN User Driver" With this driver you can do what you want to, without it, I do not think you can. I haven't tried it with the MSI drivers. Have tried it with upgraded drivers and it worked.

Many thanks.

First The H3970 with PPC2002 will not be a client in your LAN, but can use the ICS to access the internet. Have a look in our Bluetooth Guides to check how to do this: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=449 You'll find guides for Pocket PC OS 2002 (one for H3970 and one for H5450).
The MSI drivers you have probably allow this type of connection now, so don't hurry to upgrade.
Are you running ANY personal firewall (including the Windows XP one ) on that machine with Bluetooth? Zone Alarm, Symantec Desktop and NIS are really bad for this. Even when disabled they interfere with some internal communications. You have to uncheck the option to start the software when the computer starts to make this work properly - terrible stuff.

I remember that in the past the MSI drivers would not accept bridging the Bluetooth connection with a network connection. If this is still the case, John's problem may be in the fact that he is bridging the connection (he stated that in his first post).
Does the new version of the driver support bridging the BT connection with the home network connection?

John Martin - 30 Nov 2003 08:58 GMT Well, the MSI driver seems to support bridging, in that i have bridged the bluetooth and wired lan connections on machine A, and can then access everything on the entire network when connected via the bluetooth network from the laptop. As i said in my original post, the bluetooth network itself seems to work fine, the only problem seems to be with the ipaq.
I'm still interested to know what/where these updated ipaq drivers are... I found various broken links referring to a file at billionton called CFBTCE-N.zip, which i eventually managed to find elsewhere, but my ipaq wouldn't let me install it! Whenever the ipaq installer came up, the new drivers were not listed in the programs to install, which according to the installer, meant that the software was not intended for use with this device! Can anyone please help me find these updated drivers for a UK iPaq 3970?
Thanks

Just because it's not listed it doesn't mean it'll not work. Tap the Bluetooth icon on your Pocket PC andcheck the version. If it's 1.1 then it's the original one, otherwise the new one.

The problem is with the install program that runs from the PC... It does the usual step of "retrieving application info" from the device, but then just lists the apps that are already installed, rather than giving me the option of installing the bluetooth drivers. The installer doesn't seem to want to install these drivers onto this iPaq. I've tried looking for ways to "fool" the installer, but haven't found anything yet.
So the installer is not actually getting as far as making any changes to the device. After listing what's already installed, the only option is to "finish" - at which point the iinstaller just closes without making any alteractions.
Help!

Well, i now have installed the wonderful, shiny new bluetooth software! Turned out it just would not install from the exe file to run on the PC... But if i interrupted the install, went into the temp directory and copied the cab files to the ipaq, i could install the cab from there.
One soft reset later, and i've now got the new bluetooth software, and connected to the bluetooth lan, and can browse the internet and network resources from the ipaq!!! hurrah!!! (I've had to set all the internet settings on the iPaq to use "work settings")
The only thing left to fight with now is the ActiveSync settings.... ... ...!!!
Thanks for the help!
PS - if anyone else wants the updated drivers, and doesn't want to fight to find them like i had to, you can get them from:
http://www.billionton.com.tw/website/download/step3.asp?id=29
The package (qhich is quite a big download), actually includes ppc2002 and ppc2003 drivers. I downloaded the BluetoothN version, i'm not sure what the difference with th bluetoothB version is.
Anyway, this is the closest i've ever got to getting things up and running, so i'm happy for the time being!!
John.
