Opening files across Wi-Fi

Hello,

I have a PocketPC (Toshiba) with integrated 802.11b.  Using Windows
Mobile 2003, I tried to open a file across the network using File Explorer.
However, that does not seem to work.  My only guess is that the PocketPC is
not capable of opening files that are not already stored locally?  If this
is not the case, or even if it is, could someone confirm or deny this with
the appropriate corrective steps...if any.

I was doing this only this morning, you just click on 'open' in file
explorer, then open the pc you're trying to connect to.

Neil....thanks.

I do that...that is, I open the PC I am trying to so this with and I can
"see" the files in my file explorer.  However, when I click on one, I cannot
open it...I can only copy it and then I have to past it into a local folder
in order to open it.....is this what you noticed also?

Do you suppose you are clicking on a file for which you don't have
an application viewer or editor?

What type of file?  What extension?
Do you have such an application on the PDA?

TGF,

I'm pretty sure you can't do it natively with FileExplorer on the PPC.  I
CAN do it with Resco Explorer which came with the 5555.  You might check
your CD that came with your Toshiba to see if they included Resco.  It
didn't come pre-installed on mine I had to install it separately.  I have
streamed MP3s all the time and am right now streaming a video (wmv) file out
to my iPAQ which is playing it in WMP after I doubleclicked it in Resco
Explorer.  If you didn't get it with your Toshiba you can get it here

Hope this helps - this is what FileExplorer SHOULD have been.

Open File Explorer on the PocketPC and tap the right-most small icon at the bottom, ie. the one that
looks like a hand holding trash can. Note that you can only cut-n-paste/copy files between the
desktop and PPC.

Look at Netuse, Netrunner (both FREE) or Resco File Explorer ($$$) if you need to open files across
the LAN from your PPC. Personally, I use Netuse on my 3835 and a D-Link DCF-650W wireless card...

Netuse pages...

http://www.bizzdev.com/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabindex=2&tabid=41

The others...

http://www.resco-net.com/homepage.asp

This presumes you have network shares configured on your desktop(s).

Note, leave the domain field blank if your in a SOHO workgroup environment, which most home users
are...

Additionally you may need to use a different ID than the default "Pocket_PC" for the above to work.
I use "AlPpc" for example. NetBIOS does not play well with certain characters in the name...Look at
the "WINS Naming Issues" section of this page...

http://www.cewindows.net/wce/20/protocols.htm

When you change the ID you will need to establish a new partnership with the desktop. That is not a
big deal however. Remove your PocketPC from the ActiveSync session and delete the existing
partnership. Simply answer NO when your asked if you want to delete the shared files folder. Copy
those files over to the new shared files folder for the new partnership when finished. You can then
delete the old shared files folder.

Beyond that you will *NOT* be able to see your PocketPC in the Network Neighborhood of your
desktops. That is not supported.

Get Resco Explorer. The default explorer in WM2003 is quite lacking.
