What OS is on the 5450 PocketPC 2002 or Windows Mobile 2003? Can it see any
access points or is not seeing anything? Have you removed the battery and
press the reset button 5 times?

In case of removing the batery and pressing the reset button 5 times, what
will then happen?

The WLAN module can lock up and quit responding to commands. This resets the
WLAN and allows it to work again.

And what about the data on the device? Are they gone like after a Hard
Reset?

The device is designed to have the battery removed and replaced. My
experience is pulling the battery and pressing the reset button five or more
times does not cause a hard reset. If you have data that you can not afford
to lose then Back it up first. You can never backup your device to much. Can
I guarantee that your device will not hard reset if you pull the battery,
NO. I can't. I will say if your device has been set up correctly I would not
expect this to cause a hard reset. And I don't worry about pulling my
battery and pressing the reset button.
If every time you pull the battery it hard resets, then I think your iPAQ is
defective, or you are loading software that is not compatible with the iPAQ.

Thanks for this tip! My wireless port is now unlocked again (I still can't
get a signal tho', but at least I'm one step forward!

I am running PocketPC 2002. No access points at all.
About the reset thing:
No, I have not tried. And to be frank - I am a bit reluctant to do it... My
experience with the reliability of ActiveSync and backup of IPAQ data is not
the best... Any chance the procedure you suggest may cause loss of data?

Are you running 802.11G? If so you may have to update the wlan firmware on
your 5450. Check HP's site for the list of updates and make sure you have then
installed if they apply. If you're not using 802.11G I would still make sure
evrything is updated and do the reset that David mentioned.

Is this true of the 5550 too? I am running a 802.11g in auto mode which
supports g and b devices transparently at their native bandwidths.
But my iPAQ 5550 has real problems staying connected or even detecting the
network sometimes. I updated the driver to 3.2.2.115 and didn't see anything
about a firmware upgrade.

No not for the 5550's, HP already updated the wlan firmware for it. What
type of access point are you using? You also want to make sure you have the
latest firmware for your router/ap as this makes a difference too. I have
no problem running my 5550 and 4350 on my G network.

The access point is built into the broadband wireless router i use (Buffalo
WBR-G54).

I remember having problem with my 5555 accessing one of my ap's and turns
out to be a setting on the ap. In my case the "Basic Rates" on the ap was
set to "all" and while my laptop could connect my 5555 wouldn't. Check some
of the settings on your ap, i know linksys lists the fefault settings next
to the options just in case you forget. Maybe it's the same way in your ap.
