Sorry, you are still incorrect. You do not need a high resolution digital
camera to take readable photos of a printed page. In fact, one of the
problems in places like Japan where camera phones have been available longer
than in the US, there is the problem of people taking photos of magazine
pages instead of buying the magazine.
To prove the point, I took a quick snapshot of a magazine page under a
pretty awful lighting condition (single off center light in my workroom with
the magazine on my chair seat) using a low-priced 2 megapixel camera with
the flash turned off. You can find the image at...
http://mobileviews.com/temp/paperpage.jpg
If you use Internet Explorer, it may resize it to fit the page (make it
smaller). So, place your cursor at the lower right hand corner of the image
until you see a box with four arrows pointing inwards. Click on this little
box to see the image at full resolution. You will find the text quite
readable.

OK, point conceded.
I must admit, the last time I tried this with a
<2MP camera was a while ago, and the results were
pretty bad, hence my bias against them.
I wonder, are the optics of the PPC based cameras
up to this task?

Vance: Good question. It really depends on the CF/SDIO camera used. I have
not tried the newer 1 megapixel units. But, I tested a bunch of the 640x480
(and one 800x600) units and found a lot of variance in quality. You can find
a bunch of comparison photos I took with these CF cameras (plus some camera
phones) at:

Hi Todd !
Long time !
I would have never thought what you said about taking the low res. photo
of that magazine page would work and be readable until you posted the photo
on your URL (http://mobileviews.com/temp/paperpage.jpg) my "old opinion" was
that you would need a 3 MP or higher has just been readjusted by that .jpg
you posted. Thanks for the update !
I decided to take it one step farther and print part of the page using
only medium resolution on my HP Deskjet 970 Cse and ran it thru my old HP
ScanJet 6300C using just the basic OCR software provided and was nicely
surprised that out of all that was scanned, only two errors. I would say
that is pretty darn good for a shot with low light/no flash !

Hi Todd,
I have an HP Ipaq 4155.
Just go the new HP r707 camera which I am very impressed with.
Using 5mp images in the document mode you can cycle through images really
quickly.
Plus they both use SD card technology which makes life easier.
cheers,
James
