HP 5450 and D-Link DWL-2100AP

Richard L Rosenheim - 24 May 2004 06:51 GMT Just upgrade my network from a SMC 802.11b access point to the D-Link DWL-2100AP 802.11g access point.
My Ipaq 5450 won't talk to it. The IQAP WLAN program is reporting a signal strength of 0%, and on the Status page, it just loops through "Scanning...Joining...Authenticating"
I tried adding this registry key to no avail: HKLM/Comm/vnetusba1/Parms/Tcpip/MTU (dword:160 decimal). I found this page, via Google, at http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=9&TopicId=401 On my machine, I actually needed to add the vnetusba1 key.
I have two other computers that is successfully talking with the D-Link, so it's working. I tried using the Ipaq with both WEP enabled and disabled (yes, on both the Ipaq and the D-Link). Didn't help.
I'm running PC2002. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
TIA,
Richard Rosenheim
Helio Diamant - MS/MVP, Mobile Devices - 24 May 2004 10:36 GMT The only thing I can think is that you might have disabled 802.11b support in your new router by mistake. Did you check that?

If it's already long, try short. Short will get better performance for typical setups, if it works. There may be other settings on the same page as preamble, but of course only change one thing at a time.

Richard L Rosenheim - 25 May 2004 09:41 GMT I don't see a "preamble" setting anywhere.
There are these settings:
Channel (6) Data Rate (auto) Beacon Interval (100) DTIM (1) Fragment Length (2346) RTS Length (2346) Transmit Power (full)

A 900AP+ here so what's good for this may not be good for the 2100. But other than DTIM, there's nothing different in what's common.
Beacon interval : 100 (msec, range:1~1000, default:100) RTS Threshold : 2432 (range: 256~2432, default:2432) Fragmentation : 2346 (range: 256~2346, default:2346, even number only) DTIM interval : 3 (range: 1~255, default:3) Basic rates : 1-2(Mbps) (x)1-2-5.5-11(Mbps) 1-2-5.5-11-22(Mbps) TX rates : 1-2(Mbps) (x)1-2-5.5-11(Mbps) 1-2-5.5-11-22(Mbps) Preamble type : Short Preamble (x)Long preamble Authentication : Open system Shared key (x)Auto SSID broadcast : (x)Enabled Disabled 4X Mode : Enabled (x)Disabled Antenna xmit pwr: (x)100% 17dBm 50% 15dBm 25% 12dBm 12.5% 10dBm Antenna select : Left antenna Right antenna (x)Diversity antenna

And the obvious things, whatever those are. How about a firmware update to the 2100 (that'd be the last thing I'd try) ? There's always d-link tech support (just kidding).
FWIW, I get a 0.55 MB/sec rate between here and my iPAQ 4155, which is as good as you'll ever get on a 802.11b card, anywhere, on anything (close to the best possible anyway). On any other device I get in the 0.40-.49s MB/sec range. 0.55 MB/sec = 4.6 Mbps real-life, close-by, throughput, or 4614 kbps (mp3=128 kbps, CD=1411 kbps) and with CPU to spare (all my radios other than the 4155's use all the CPU they can during a xfer, if given the opportunity).

Richard L Rosenheim - 27 May 2004 17:17 GMT Thanks for the reply.
I've been trading emails with D-Link. He did suggest dropping the RTS Threshold and Fragmentation both 2000, but that didn't help.
I've also updated the iPaq to PC2003 (along with the HP patches), but that hasn't helped either. The iPaq does display the SID and says it connected, but I can't connect to anything.

So, it used to work on a SMC AP but doesn't work on the 2100. So that makes it a 2100 problem. What did dlink say about the preamble setting not being there?
I recently updated the firmware (for wpa) on my 900+ and I left it in 4x mode. All my radios worked (have six) except a dlink 660W (of all?). It took me a while but I saw the 4x in there and got rid of it. Doing that also brought back a few "hidden" entries -- hidden only when 4x was enabled. I saw those flash by in 4x so I looked at the script in the web browser. That's where I saw the 4x code. Or, it went something like that. Anyway, maybe the script that shows that status screen can shed some light on things hidden.

Richard L Rosenheim - 30 May 2004 06:15 GMT More frustrated than desperate at the moment.
There is a setting on the 2100AP called "Super G Mode". I suspect that's the same as your "4x mode". It's disabled (and always have been).
I didn't ask D-Link about the preamble setting. Just sent them an email outlining the problem, what I've tried, etc. The suggestion was to change both the RTS Length and Fragment Length to 2000. I tried it, didn't help, and I haven't heard back from them yet. Probably will end up having to call them next week.
Which, of course, is no fun. I'll probably end up in an endless loop -- D-Link will claim it's a HP issue, HP will claim it's a D-Link issue, and neither one will really want to help.

In case you haven't, make a backup of the 5400, print all setup pages from the 2100, and reset both. Don't restore any backups (yet). Start from scratch. After that, if nothing's changed, eBay - meet dlink 2100, or send them both packing. Or make use of the SMC AP if you still have it. Pick channel 1, 6, or 11 for one AP, and another for the other AP. Make the 5400 only use the SMC. If none of that is possible, or doesn't change anything, take the shotgun approach. That'll take care of any frustration. Send the pieces back to dlink and hp.

Fishwife9925 - 25 May 2004 21:49 GMT Just go to HP and make sure you have all the latest Wi-Fi update patches, I have exactly the same combination H5450 and DWL-2100AP and solved it by installing the patches. Word of warning though....I have upgraded my H5450 to PPC2003 and I can't remember if the patches work on PPC2002, still worth trying. Upgrade to PPC2003 is definitely worth it. The Wi-Fi util is better once you get your head round the Zero config scenario....don't forget that you wont benefit from 54 megs LAN speed as the H5450 is only capable of 11 megs (11b)

[quoted text clipped - 17 lines] > > Richard Rosenheim Richard L Rosenheim - 26 May 2004 23:00 GMT Okay, I upgraded the 5450 to PC2003. I installed the WLAN Firmware Update (100.5.39 dated 31 Jul 03) and the WLAN Driver Update (3.2.4.133 dated 19 May 2004).
I'm still not able to connect. The iPaq detects the SID and say I'm connected. But, when I attempt to access either my local file server or the web, I get the "Cannot Connect" dialog. It says "Cannot connect with current connection settings. To change your connection settings, tap Settings."
Under the "Network Management" page, I have both combo boxes set to "My Work Network". On the "Configure Wireless Networks" page, "Networks to access" is set to "All available". "Automatically connect to non-preferred networks" is checked.
I currently have WEP disabled on the access point, along with MAC filtering. The AP has that latest firmware installed.
Any ideas?
Thanks for you help,
Richard Rosenheim
