Is it possible the router has been changed to an 802.11g only mode versus an 802.11b only or
802.11b/g mixed mode?
Are you using a hex WEP key on the iPAQ 5550 versus an Ascii WEP key, if your using WEP?
Does the WEP, or WPA, key match the access point?
Have you tried turning off WEP/WPA on the access point and the iPAQ to see if its a key problem?
Are you broadcasting the SSID from the access point? If not, did you configure the correct SSID on
the iPAQ?
Do you get a valid IP, ie. a 192.168.X.X.X address and not a 169.X.X.X address from the access
point? Use these tools to check that...

Can you ping the access point and other desktops on your LAN? Use vxUtil for that...

Hi Al
Thanks for getting back to me. See below for answers to the points you've
raised:
> Is it possible the router has been changed to an 802.11g only mode

> 802.11b/g mixed mode?
- I've checked that and the router is set to mixed
> Are you using a hex WEP key on the iPAQ 5550 versus an Ascii WEP key,
> if your using WEP?
- I have WEP disabled on the router and have selected "Disabled"
on the Data Encryption part of the Configure Network Authentication screen
on the iPaq
> Does the WEP, or WPA, key match the access point?
- Same as above - both are disabled. My choices on the router
side are 64 bit or 128 bit and I've bypassed them both and set the router to
security mode "Disabled"
> Have you tried turning off WEP/WPA on the access point and the iPAQ to

- Doesn't solve the problem!
> Are you broadcasting the SSID from the access point? If not, did you

- The router is broadcasting "belkin64g" and this is mirrored
in the "network name" box on the Configure Wireless Network screen

- When I try to ping the 192.168.2.1 IP address (that of the router) from
the iPaq it is unsuccessful

- Don't seem to be able to.
? Is your Connection Manager setup correctly?
The version of the operating system shown in the connection manager document
is different to mine. I'm reviewing the HP document now, although it too
shows different screens.
What sort of baffles me is that the green light is on and the arrows
indicate there's an active connection there - does this indicate that there's
an encryption issue? Ie the connection is sound it's just that neither side
is talking the same language. I'm also surprised that when I do the complete
reboot thing some of the residual setting in the connections manager remain
instead of the iPaq returning to its virginal factory settings.
Joe, thanks again for your help with this, any further insights will be
greatly appreciated.

Michael Rowe

Are you running the latest ROM and WiFi drivers on your device? For example on my iPAQ 5555 I have
these updates installed in this order...
1. http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/handhelds/us/download/20669.html
2. http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/handheldiPAQ/us/download/20968.html
3. http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/handhelds/us/download/21711.html
The big list of available upgrades, patches, etc...

I don't understand the statement about the "The version of the operating system shown in the
connection manager document is different to mine. I'm reviewing the HP document now, although it
too shows different screens." The screen shots were taken on an iPAQ 3835 running the WM2003 OS and
are identical to my current iPAQ 5555 other than a reference to a D-Link card in the network card
list along with the addition of the integrated 802.11b and Bluetooth hardware in the same list. The
D-Links was an add-on 802.11b card I used with the 3835 versus the integrated 802.11b on the 5555.
Have you recently changed firmware on the access point/router? I had an issue with my Linksys
BEFSR41 recently were reflashing the firmware fixed an issue with its internal DHCP server not
handing out an IP to my iPAQ...
Lastly, sometimes...
1. Powering off the iPAQ, removing the battery for 5-10 seconds, then reinstalling the battery fixes
issues like this.
2. A hard reset may also be in order...
