OK, Steve, I got a hint from what you wrote, so I de-selected the Favorites
folder as an item to be synched. Then the Active Sync worked!
But, is there some limit on how many favorites it can have? The PPC itself
seems to handle it. This all started after I put the favorites into folders
within the main folder but forgot to do the same on the desktop (actually a
laptop). Then I fixed that, but at that point ActiveSync crashed. So I
downloaded and reinstalled the 3.8, but still to no avail, then I removed
the favorites back out of the subfolders on both the PPC and the laptop (and
deleted the subfolders on both the laptop and the PPC). Which took me to
where I was just as I wrote to the forum.
Now I can synch, but without a backup on the laptop. Of course, I do backup
periodically to an SD card, so I guess all is not lost.
Your thoughts, Steve?
Thanks,
Dave

I suspect there is a corrupt favorite. Move all favorites in the
Mobile Favorites folder to a different directory and recheck Favorites
and sync. That should work, but now you have no favorites on the
device.
Start dropping small groups of favorites back where they belong and
watch ActiveSync copy each group over. One of two things will happen.
Either it will all work and whatever corruption there was has been
cleaned up or it will crash on a small group. You will then know which
set of favorites is the problem and you can narrow it down to the
single file in the same way.

Ed, thanks so much! You were correct about the corrupt favorite. What I did
was to open IE on the laptop, opening each bookmark in the Mobile Favorites
laptop IE folder one by one in turn. I found three corrupt sites, and
deleted them both from the laptop browser favorites and from the PPC
bookmarks. Then it synched!

Great! I always suspect corrupt data with AS sync problems before I
look at reinstalling, system restores, etc.
