Is anyone else having problems with AS 4.0?  I'm not sure if it's my
computer or the program that's playing up.

I've just bought a IMate Jasjar and I've upgraded my AS to version 4 but now
I have to do a complete reboot before I can reconnect either of my Pocket
PCs.  I went to the Microsoft web site to check if there'd been a update,
but I can't see Activesync 4 for download at all.

AS4 has been released for developer testing and (imho) be avoided by
anyone else as it has a raft of problems _including_ the inability to
then install an older version of activesync without direct registry edits.

See Chris' pages at http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/wce/activesync3.1remove.htm
if you elect to go back to 3.7.1 ...the latest version I am remotely
comfortable with.

Oh wow!  Thanks for that.  I kind of thought it was necessary for the
Windows Mobile 5 PPCs to work.  Otherwise I wouldn't have even bothered.

AFAIK, Windows Mobile 5 devices are REQUIRED to use AS 4.0...

What OS are you running? If its WM 2003 or WM 2003 SE then don't install AS
4.0...

Unfortunately I fear you are right.  I've reverted to AS 3.X and now it
won't connect at all.  I'm running WM 5 on an IMate Jasjar.  I guess it's
back to buggy AS 4.

hi gang

I found the answer to this issue, and its a strange one.

When you create the partnership with activesync 4, if you are using outlook
2003 in cache mode, then you have to be connected live to your exchange
server when you create the partnership, otherwise you wont be able to sync
successfully.

I too have a jasjar, and I used to use my O2XDA running windows mobile 2002,
when I upgraded to active sync 4 for my jasjar I immediately had sync
problems.

After much research, and a few clues, in particular the fact that active
sync 4.x now syncs over tcp/ip, led to the firewall issues of active sync.
There are instructions on the microsoft web site on how to cure the firewall
issues, but that didnt fix the sync problems.

I had to do the following to get my jasjar to work :-

1) disconnect my jasjar from pc, because you cant be connected to delete a
partnership
2) delete the current partnership
3) connect to work via vpn (working live works as well) so I am live to our
exchange server
4) fire up outlook and get up to date
5) connect my jasjar and create a new partnership
6) wait for the sync to complete

all done, no more errors, syncs live and disconnected, no more issues

enjoy

Hi,
I've been running ActiveSync 4.0 for the past 4 months and I haven't seen
these issues.

I have some questions for you to help understand your configuration:

1.  What desktop OS? What version of Outlook are you using?
2.  Do you have a software firewall installed?
3.  What other USB devices do you have plugged in?  Are you using a USB hub?

At least with this information we can try to see if it's a hardware or
software conflict.

Sure.  Any help is appreciated :-)

I'm using XP Home fully patched with Outlook 2003.  I have ZoneAlarm with
Antivirus installed.  When I first installed AS4 ZA asked if I wanted to
permit connections and I agreed forever.

I've got lots and lots of USB devices attached those turned on include
printer, scanner, external HDD, USB hub, and memory card reader.

When I tried to install it first I had it directly attached to a factory
installed USB port.  After getting as far as "connecting" with a "this
program has to close" dialog box twice, I switched to a powered USB hub on
the guess that maybe the Jasjar required more power (it was charging as
well).  This actually seems to work better.  About 3/4 of the time it now
seems to work and the rest it just automatically connects as a guest or
closes again.
