Fixing AS 4.1 Problems...

Ok... So in all my brilliance I unwittingly downloaded activesync 4.1
on my WM 2003 SE device. Then I read it was for WM 5 Only. Ok, so I
uninstall it, and I reinstall AS 3.8.. And now... it doesn't run...
First I get an error message saying my hardware is not "meeting windows
logo" requirements. And of course I installed it anyway. It installed
but now AS 3.8 connects to the PDA and then... nothing, WCEmgr doesn't
even start. I get wcescomm.exe but Activesync itself doesn't run AND my
computer see's that it's connected but I can't access it thru explorer.
OH I also get an error message saying "Critical communications services
have failed to start, try resetting the mobile device and try again."
Yeah.. did that. NADA. Soo... Help! thanks.

J.D.,

First, just so you know, you can run AS4.1 with Windows Mobile 2003 SE.  The
new features of AS4.1 are for Windows Mobile 5.0 only but that doesn't mean
it won't work with your device.

That said, you need to completely uninstall AS from your PC, restart, and
install 3.8 again.  You also need to soft reset your Pocket PC as well then
try to establish the connection again.

Beverly's post from the other day has some important info on this:

"Uninstalling activesync 4.1 does not allow you to revert to 3.x... see
Chris's faq's for the manual dll and registry removal first if you
intend to revert"

Does he mean "Chris De Herrera"?
96ProbeZEdGT@gmail.com - 22 Nov 2005 20:23 GMT
Yes I think he does mean Chris De Herrera. I read that faq and went to
manually delete those files and it wouldn't let me, "Error Denied: Make
sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not
in use" Sooo.. Next??

What is the link to the FAQ they are referring to? You probably have to
remove something from the registry, reboot and then delete the dlls (I'm
just guessing).

If I read it, I could help out more. I noticed Chris posted here recently
but he had 5 urls in his sig and I didn't want to spend all night trying to
find it.

http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/activesync/tshoot-as4x.htm

this is the faq. Ok, new problem, I've got activesync to install and
work on one of my profiles for my computer, however on the other
profile it connects but won't allow it to sync with the other PDA (i.e.
no syncing the calander contacts tasks, etc.) it says attention
required and  that the files or folders are not syncable and that I
should remove and reconnect that PDA.

Also windows explorer won't open my PDA to browse it. It's there but if
I click on it, nothing happens. I'm now also getting error 75: can't
find path or folder when starting up. Dunno if that means anything but
there it is.

>> Chris's faqs <<

Sorry, but I, also, was unable to find the uninstall information when I
made that post... on the referenced link, I finally found in point 8 on
the link at http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/activesync/tshoot-as4x.htm

"If you have to uninstall ActiveSync 4.x and want to reinstall
ActiveSync 3.x, you need to use Add/Remove programs to uninstall
ActiveSync 4.x.

Then you need to delete the files
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RAPI.DLL
and
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CEUTIL.DLL

Then you can install ActiveSync 3.x normally. Please note that
uninstalling ActiveSync 4.x will delete all your partnerships."

Ok... Let me try this again... I've already done that. That's not my
problem now. I'm past that point...

My new problem is that windows is doing two things.

1) When I go to another persons profile on the PC (i.e. my fathers) and
then try to sync his PDA it gets attention required and that I need to
uplug the USB cable, THIS IS NOT I REPEAT NOT A UNRESOLVED ITEM PROBLEM
it's a "Attention Required" problem. No matter what I've done even
deleting the partnership it does not change. How do I fix this?

2) Windows explorer does not explore my PPC, it doesn't open it at all,
I click on it, and nothing happens, even when I try to open it thru
active sync I get NADA.

Oh, and everytime I try to reinstall any hardware I'm now getting an
error that none of it passes windows logo testing. Sooo... I have no
idea what that means either... HELP. Thanks!
