Has anyone ever used this program?  Will it work with WM5?  Thanks

I don't have a WM5 device, but the program works very well on my iPAQ 5555
over my home 802.11b wireless LAN to the public internet. I have used it to
talk to my brother in Florida. Both of us using wireless iPAQs...:-)

works... camera support is limited to a few older cameras, but voice and
text work without issue.

If you want to communicate directly from ppc to ppc, you will need to
get by the adhoc connection issues.

What might those be?  Thanks.

I know that the HP CF camera was one, but don't know any further details.

Suggest contacting the Portrait people directly.  It has been my
experience (a few years ago) that they were very responsive to user
questions and input.

Well you'll need to setup an adhoc connection that means you'll need to be
in a static IP addressing mode as their is not a DHCP server. You'll need to
configure your WEP key if you use one. And you'll need to use IP addressing.

That's no necessarily so with the ad hoc connection. The person to whom you
wish to talk might be half way around the world. Portrait does use IP so
you would need a valid IP connection, but you can use DHCP. You just need
the IP address of the person you are calling (so statics might help.) If
you are using WiFi (there are other ways to be on an IP network other than
WiFi), you will need to be able to connect to  the connection point, but if
you need to set up the WEP point depends on the connection point. Many are
open, some are subscription (Starbucks), others you just need to register
yout MAC address (my local university.)

To be clear my brother and I only use the audio chat and file transfer
features to test. We did not have cameras on our iPAQs. I have tested with a
local desktop on my home LAN and received video from the desktop web cam.
That worked well also.

As far as addressing is concerned, Portrait does direct IP-to-IP calling so
I simply called the local IP of my desktop or in the case of my brother the
public IP of his home router or vice versa, ie. he called my routers public
IP. He/I had previously setup the proper port forwarding on his/my router to
point Portrait call, video and audio traffic to his/my iPAQ. See Portrait
help for port information, but off the top of my head it was...

TCP Port 8100 Portrait Call
UDP Port 8110 Portrait Video
UDP Port 8120 Portrait Audio

You also might look into using Skype for audio chat. That works real well,
IMHO. Currently my brother and I use Skype all the time (versus Portrait),
either iPAQ to iPAQ or iPAQ to desktop (his or mine). Skype has superior
audio IMHO.

You should be able to shortcut that IP malarkey - it did  and afaik
still does allow calling to MSN messenger contacts.

Al,  since you brought up skype, curious to your thoughts of portrait
compared to skype.  if all you are using is the chat and voice, how do they
compare ??
Thanks

The audio quality, at least in our experience, is very good and far superior
to Portrait. Of course we both have broadband internet access and that may
make a difference. I also seem to remember that Portrait audio on the
PocketPC was half-duplex only, although its been a while sine I used
Portrait and later versions may have gone to full-duplex.
