slow Qusnetsoft reader

I just updated my ROM (Axim X51v WM5) to A12  and reinstalled my software.
Everything works great BUT Qusnetsoft reader is now incredibly slow.  As I
never timed it before I can only estimate but I'd start the sync before
having my shower and it was always done by the time I got back to the
computer.  Now it takes at least twice that long and I don't think I'd be
far off if I guessed more like three times that long.  It's also terribly
slow when I go from the group listing to opening one of the groups to start
reading...I'd guess about ninety seconds minimum to load a group with fifty
or sixty messages in it.

Has anyone else had this problem?  Is there a newer version I need to get?

If I'm stuck with this, I think I'll make the move to QMail but I've
forgotten the trick to get it from an English site...help, anyone?

Thanks,
Tim

Hello Tim,

I too have problems with Qusnet NewsReader, and it may be similar to yours.
i am presently composing an email to the software developer. Yours is an
interesting addition to the collection of problems people are reporting with
this NNTP / RSS newsreader.

Maybe that is what I am experiencing -- extremely slow operations. So slow
that the beachball icon seems to rotate forever, and everything else grinds
to a halt. I have been soft-resetting the Ax when this happens thinking that
the program has hung, but you are now suggesting that it is slow and not
hung ...

Don't know how many newsgroups you have but that would be too long for me.
I have maybe 6 newsgroups and I expect that it should take maybe a couple
of minutes tops -- over wireless.

BTW -- what encoding are you using? Did you leave it at the default Cyrillic
(ROI8-R)?

Wow!

You never said what version you were using. I am using 3.3.

TM> If I'm stuck with this, I think I'll make the move to QMail

Isn't QMail an SMTP (email) reader not NNTP or Usenet reader?

Thanks for the note, Wayne.  I also am using the most recent
Qusnetsoft--3.3--but since my post have found the url for Qmail and have
installed it.  It, Qmail, is a pop mail program but also does NNTP quite
nicely.  As it's not perfect I'm still interested in whether or not
Qusnetsoft will improve over time or fade away.

Having just heard that there was an update to Quesnetsoft in August, I've
gone to the site and gotten 3.3.11, replacing my 3.3 10 and everything is
back to normal so if anyone else is experiencing a serious slowdown, you
might want to check out the more recent build.

Glad to hear that for you Tim.

I am still having the occasional "so slow it might as well have hung" issue
I always had. I have no idea what is wrong. I am also running 3.3.0.11. I
think it is marginally different now that I installed it from the CAB file
this last time.

I am just finishing uip the email to the developer.

No, but I did send a test message before spending a whole bunch of time composing
the real one, and he responded saying that he's ready to receive.

I did get a 'message read' confirmation this morning, so I know he got it.

well.. i'm here and i acessible. you can email me anytime to
support(at)qusnetsoft.ru. i answered to _every_ emails i received to
support. if you don't receive my response check your spam filters.

about problems. latest qnr relese 3.3.0.11 works fine on more than 1000
devices (as i see in registration records). yes, some peoples have problems
with database speed and with connection, especially with ssl sources. but
after analize these problems most ot it was resolved.

common recomendation:

pack database periodically. database grows every sync operation and one
time can radically slow down your system. don't store more than 300
articles per group. you can to limit size in settings. keep your storage
card clean. any file system problems can crash database. i recommend check
your card periodically by chkdsk using card reader.

use so fast connection as you can. qnr allows read and write offline, so
you can use it feature. don't reboot your device during synch. if you have
problem with connection - check your newsgroup acessibility; check your
speed enough (some providers rejects slow connection); check your device
network connection status; check your group authentification settings;
check codepage and transfer-encoding compatible with your server (most
servers works with defaults, but for some you need to set for example
Western European codepage and base64 transfer-encoding.

about installation. qnr makes record in brogram files folder, database
foler and registry. standard uninstall must clear all but database. in
registry only one key created - HKCU\Software\NewsReader2004.

and at last. some peoples reports that sometimes just full uninstall and
next installation resolved problems. but i can't explain this phenomen :)
