M Skabialka - 23 Jul 2008 17:50 GMT I am looking into buying a new cell phone that combines a phone and a pda. Some of them say they come with Windows Mobile 6 Standard, and some with Windows Mobile 6 Professional. I can't seem to be able to find out the difference at Microsoft.com. What is the difference?
M Skabialka - 23 Jul 2008 17:55 GMT Found the answer on Wikipedia - I need Windows Mobile 6 Professional for a Pocket PC/Mobile Phone.

Sven - 25 Jul 2008 03:15 GMT Linley provided a good resource, but the major difference between Pro and Standard is support for a touch Screen in Pro. So Standard is much more a 'phone' with a lot of PDAish capabilities. You do all entry via the phone pad though, which can be challenging if you need to enter a lot. There is always a BT keyboard as an option if you need to enter a lot occasionally. The other distinguishing feature is typically size. Standard devices, being primarily phones, are typically smaller than Professional devices being primarily PDAs.
So really capability is not that different, but usage is. That's a personal decision.

I haven't played with a WM6 Standard Smartphone (non-touchscreen)- my wife's is a WM5, but unless things have changed much, capabilities are still different- IIRC, there's still no cut-and-paste function on Standard, while Office documents can now be edited, new ones can't be created, and File Explorer can't browse network shares like on WM Pro devices.

However, there're third-party, free (!) apps that allow for this - e.g., VITO's CopyPaste.

Sven - 26 Jul 2008 02:00 GMT Most all of the noted deficiencies have workarounds on the phone. Might take a little more geeking than having them out of the box, but by and large you can do the same things. If you are trying to do a lot of things that a PDA is more suited to, then you should buy a PDA.

Even with a full keyboard, it lacks a touchscreen, putting it in the Windows Mobile "Standard" (formerly called "Smartphone") category rather than WM "Professional" (formerly called "Pocket PC Phone Edition.")
This means it lacks the features I mentioned earlier- cut-and-paste, network share browsing via WiFi, etc.

Agreed -- Just pointing out that the "You do all entry via the phone pad" isn't entirely true.

It all depends on the model... some have keyboard, some don't. The latter entirely rely on the numeric keypad (or an external keyboard).

Werner "Menneisyys" Ruotsalainen [MVP - Windows - Mobile Devices] - 25 Jul 2008 09:04 GMT BTW, still speaking of this q, I *really* recommend following my blog. I've published several articles on the real-world compatibility issues of Standard, particularly as far as "hacking" originally PPC-only apps onto Smartphones is concerned.

M Skabialka - 25 Jul 2008 15:03 GMT Thanks, I will look into that.
I bought the phone; a Samsung SCH-i760 with WM Professional. It uses a stylus and I can write on the screen using transcriber like my old PDA, or use the pull-out keyboard, which beats the tar out of pressing the A button 3 times to get the letter C on my old cell phone! Each has its benefits depending on what I am doing. I have learned a lot about Windows Mobile and smartphones in the last few days! Another question - on my old PDA, when PocketPC 2003 came out I had to get the upgrade from 2002 from Toshiba. Verizon says they don't have an upgrade from WM 6 to WM 6.1 - does that mean I have to go to Samsung, or Microsoft, or wait on Verizon??? Or am I stuck with 6.0?

Roger - 25 Jul 2008 16:22 GMT If it works like it did with HTC, they said if you bought the phone SIM free then you need to go to the manuafacturer to ask for an upgrade; if you bought it through Verison then Verison should provide the upgrade; if they say that they won't then you are stuck with 6.0. Fortunately I bought mine SIM free and HTC provided the upgrade.
Best of luck.
