Any help appreciated.

Just got a new samsung omnia and synced it with my Sony Vaio Vista Notepad.
Two syncs went through partially ok ( got errors).  Now when I connect the
phone to the USB port I cannot see my phone when I check my computer and the
mobile device centre says its not connected.  However, when I
connect/disconnect  the phone I get a notification sound and the little blue
circle.

I had this with my old T-Mobile Vario as well and never fixed it.

Try unchecking "Enable Advanced Network Functionality" under Start /
Settings /Connections (Tab) / USB-to-PC.  This has the device connect in
legacy USB mode instead of the more problematic network adapter mode, which
often causes connection problems on some setups.
