Our company uses a Pocket PC application that is working well on 2003 SE;
however, it is not compatible with Mobile 5.0.  We are trying to find
someone that may be able to assist us with migrating this application to
Mobile 5.0.  We do not have the source so are not able to rebuild the
application.  We are hoping we can find out what is the root cause of the
incompatibility and develop a hack to fix this problem.

I would appreciate your help in locating a knowledgeable technical resource
that may be able to assist us.  If you either know of, or can recommend the
best way to find people that have the skills I would require, that would be
greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Robert

As Beverly Howard pointed out in microsoft.public.pocketpc, a more
explicit description of the symptoms would really help.

Do you want someone to 1) tell you how to modify the program, 2)
modify and rebuild the program, or 3) replace the program?

I got rid of my Mobile 5.0 device when the application didn't work so I do
not recall the exact symptoms.

What I am hoping I can find is someone that can determine why there is an
incompatibility and if there is a way of remedying the problem without
rebuilding the application.  Since I do not have the source for the
application, I cannot fix it by rebuilding the code so I need to work around
this issue.

I would like to provide better feedback on the problem, but do not want to
buy a Mobile 5.0 device if I can avoid it.  Is there a simulator for a PC
that I can use to test the application?  Can I download one from the
Internet?

Regards,

Robert

You can get the "Device Emulator" for Windows Mobile 5, which differs from
the older emulator in that the application does not need to be specially
compiled for it. This might give you enough information on how it fails to
be helpful.

However I would imagine that developing a solution for the problem without
the application source code may well prove to be almost as expensive as
having it rewritten (I'm guessing of course as I don't know how complex the
app is). But the kind of people who can write patches for compiled code tend
to be more expensive than application coders.

Thanks for the information.  You may be right that it would be more
expensive.  I would just like to find someone to check this to know for
sure.
