Is there a microsoft white paper on how to setup Exchange
2003 so I can sync it with my new mpx200 (smartphone)?

I was under the impression that I could use some sort of
SMS message to initiate a sync - so my phone would let me
know as soon as I had new mail... (like blackberry does)

please help asap!  Thanks!

I think the features you have seen are only available in smartphone 2003
mpx200 still has 2002.

After reading the link you sent me i see that there is
nowhere where it says that i need windows mobile 2003...

it says when using mobile 2002 and exchange 2003 I should
be able to have a lot of different features...

including:

"Get up-to-date notifications. Receive specially
formatted short message service (SMS) messages from
Exchange 2003 that wake up your Windows-powered device
and prompt your device to initiate a synch. This feature,
new in Exchange 2003, enables you to set the conditions
of these alerts by using your Inbox rules."

Any ideas?  Thanks!

Take a look at http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=94951 for
instructions on how to get Server Activesync to work....  It works
fine on my MPX200...

I haven't experimented with the server notifications, though, so I
can't deal with your second issue yet....

Server notifications are only supported when the device is running 2003 as
well. If the device is running 2002 (as the MPX is), you can get pretty
close to the same experience by configuring the client to automatically sync
every 15 minutes.

:(

And here I am trying to support microsoft...
I bought 4 of these things thinking I would be able to
rid my servers of blackberry software - with the hope
that it would emulate what the blackberry already does
and has been doing for years. :(

This webcast transcript from some of the some upperlevel
guys is what lead me to believe that we would be able to
use the SMS messaging with the "new smartphone" - not
that I would need to let the first few series of
smartphones pass me by until they were up to the "new"
software that was realeased back in June 03 :(

Well - here is to hoping I dont have to return these
phones and microsoft and motorola will hear the crys of
many and will get us up to speed. :)

Marc,

My apologies for the confusion. Before you send the phones back, do give the
15 minute sync thing a try. I'm pretty sure you'll find that it works quite
well, and with all the other additional things you can do with the
Smartphone you'll be happy to ditch your Blackberries. For what it's worth,
I gave my Blackberry up about 1.5 years ago, and SP's been a fine
replacement.

Thanks for your quick response - yeah I am trying to get
this active sync to work - I have configued my exchange
2003 box and it seems to be working with the OMA - but I
think my ISA server is blocking me from doing a wireless
sync :(

Any idea if microsoft is planning on upgrading the
software on these mpx200s or are they just going to ditch
the project and worry about the mpx220?

Thanks again for your response!

Marc

OS as well as the specific utilities on mobile devices are branded &
packaged by the mobile operator, in MPx200 case, this is AT&T Wireless.
There is the "radio stack" code that is especially operator-specific.

Windows Mobile 2003 OS has been available to them for some time. It's MO's
decision to use whichever version.

Because devices must be supported by the operator, Microsoft (similarly
Motorola) is not in a position to provide patches or upgrades directly to
end-users. If you like, write to AT&T Wireless and demand Windows Mobile
2003 upgrade for your MPx200s, they are the only one who can make this
happen. Without proper testing of compatibility of various components, they
will not let you upgrade the OS and stay within support boundaries.

Hope this clarifies the mechanics a bit.

Baris.
