Hi,
I'm thinking about purchasing a PDA for using along with a GPS receiver,
can anyone tell me what would be the most cost effective option ie. what PDA
to go for which could be connected up to a cheap GPS receiver?
Thanks in advance

Palm Zire 71 together with an iGolf SD-card GPS.
Zire = $250
iGolfgps = $300

Some of the other 'solutions' already presented are pretty expensive! Look at
the Delorme Earthmate GPS unit, which can interface either via Bluetooth or via
dedicated cable to your PDA...it is about $100, plus about $25 for dedicated
cable (unsure what Bluetooth costs). www.delorme.com
I have been using Delorme Street Atlas on my laptop and the Delorme GPS unit
for many years now, and have been very happy. I don't interface the Delorme to
my Palm, because I have had a Magellan docking unit for my Vx for several years
(before the Earthmate came out), but the newer PDA's have dedicated cables to
the Delorme Earthmate.

just don't try to use the earthmate with a treo 600. even though it is the
year 2004 and we've put men on the moon, electric golf carts on mars, and
sprayable cheese in a can, we can't seem to develop a serial cable that will
connect the earthmate to a treo 600's serial port. really.

It's no wonder...the Earthmate is a USB device.

Delorme includes an adapter cable to connect to serial devices to the docking
unit for PDA connection. So the question is whether or not the Treo offers a
cable to go from its proprietary connector to serial connector (I would be
surprised if it didn't offer that).

are you asking if such a device can be made? sure. but does it exist
yet? no. sigh.

USB = universal SERIAL bus. serial cable. RS232 is
dead. long live USB. what's your point?
